Perhaps they opened it as the passengers behavior got more and more erratic? I really don't know what happened, but I'm amazed by people making snap judgements without knowing what went on. The only thing we know for sure is that this guys behavior was so erratic that the crew felt if was a threat to the rest of the passengers and not a good idea to head out over the open Pacific with no were to go should the guys erratic behavior continue to accelerate. The Captain has to make the call behind a closed door and based on the info he gets from the cabin crew.

Personally I have no problem at all with extra scrutiny if someone is a Muslim and acting suspiciously. It's called common sense. But it's incredibly stupid to think you should turn your back on any other potential threat just because they are not a Muslim.

I'll say it again, because, while I may not be able to spell, some of you guys seem to have a problem with comprehension.
If you are headed out over open water with no were to divert, you have to factor that in when making a judgement call on whether or not a persons behavior could be a threat, if they are getting more and more erratic, you have to consider were his behavior may be at when you are 3 hours from land.

It is getting very acceptable to turn the plane back for almost any reason now. There is an abundance of caution and great leeway given to the captain for taking decisive action today. I say hooray. Captain's authority respected with little second guessing. Need a lot more of this.
