Does anybody know which airlines will be attending the Organization of Black Airline Pilots (OBAP) convention. A friend is considering attending but he can't get any info. Does anyone have a clue?

Is he just coming to give a resume, or is he coming to support the goals and objectives for the organization?

"Is he just coming to give a resume, or is he coming to support the goals and objectives for the organization?"

Who cares as long as he pays to get in right?

WRONG!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The organization is more than a pilot hiring convention...

Are they part of that group that is hiding the fact that Jesus had a son. Maybe that was the book my wife was reading.

quite a few

Every year a good number of airlines attend the meeting. Like Women in Aviation, it is considered politically correct to attend whether you are hiring or not.

I CARE, THAT'S RIGHT!!

Why?
Because, I get tired of people using the OBAP convention as a shortcut and as a means of not more than just using this time to attempt to get a job. The airline reps at the convention is only a small portion of the purpose of the convention and the scope, objective, and purpose for OBAP in the first place.

Yes it nice that people do get jobs from this attribute, but many also show up just for this, once a year, not heard from again nor give back to the organization. And I am talking about the dues paying members so imagine how I feel for those who are not members and making this annual pilgramage to weed their resume in for a job.

If you should get there, hopefully you can attend the youth program and/or luncheon, or maybe members meeting, or talk to someone who has the best interest in OBAP, and you will see the many reasons why I CARE.

Right on Swann... I have been a member since 1996 and was very active in the PPDP.

Question for you OBAP members?

I am not african-american nor am i white but can i still join? The reason i am asking that i volunteer my time to try to get as many inner city kids in aviation as possible. Unfortunately, many of the inner city kids are black and i also came from the same neighbourhood.

When i take these children from my area flying, you should see the sparkle in their eyes. It gets bigger when you give them the chance to sit in the flightdeck. I try to do as much as possible to help out these children and feel that more minorities need to be helped in aviation or atleast to try to get them out of the 'hood.

Others have mentioned to me about joining OBAP but i always thought that it was only for african american pilots. I want to join, not for the reason for handing out resumes, but for the reason of helping out more inner city children and minorities. I dont want this to be flame bait, but i just wanted an honest opinion.

thanks.

Yes

You certianly may join, membership is not limited to only "black" as the title suggest. www.OBAP.org, There are many non-black members including hispanic and white. The last time we received numbers on the matter African-Americans were only 2% of the total pilot population, which is the main goal of the organization to increase those numbers by starting kids early in aviation, however, again any child is welcome to participate. You have stanford on your Avatar so I am assuming you are on the west cost and I saw you were a CFI, the organization runs "ACE camps" throughout the country where they take the same type of kids you mentioned and introduce them to aviation with field trips, ground schools and I think they also take them flying. The PPDP that whiskey driver spoke of is the proffesional pilot developement program, where the organization matches funds for pilot training, after completion of training they usually are CFI's and they give back by asisting in ACE camps. As a CFI you can be a big help in ACE camps. There is a convention every year where many airlines do attend and there is a sponsor airline hosting the convention, this year the convention is in Orlando and Airtran is the sponsor airline. Last year it was in Seattle and Alaska was the sponsor, we dont know where it will be next year that is usually announced at the convention. There usually are many airlines in attendance, but as stated earlier that's not the main focus, it's mostly just members getting together and having fun, the youth luncheon that swann spoke of is part of the convention also with the same goals for kids as I outlined earlier. I know this is a little long and I appologize, but just wanted to give you a run down, hope to see you at the convention.

by the way whiskey driver and swann are you going this year?

Thanks HBrow15 for the input. Just a little clarification on the convention. Yes many come and have fun, but the convention is OBAP's largest function of the year to conduct all the business at hand for that year and planning for the upcoming year and future events and goals. We have our general meeting which is where all the members can participate, give their points, aire out their concerns and vote on candidates for the positions up for election and other issues that need membership vote.

Yes I will be there from that Wednesday on to the end of the convention. Maybe I will see you there.
