If I understand this correctly, there is NO seat lock for newhires. Which would mean that if awarded 747 SO in ANC you could bid out of it as soon as seniority allowed, right? About how long would that take to get to DTW DC9?

Heyas P3,

This is absolutely correct. No seat lock for new hires, and you are free to bail as soon as you can hold something else.

Most will tell you wait until off probation to switch aircraft, since it will be a "jeopardy event" during probation, but I know more than a few who did it with zero problems.

If you are on your game, have good situational awareness and a good scan, then the DC-9 is a non-event.

Merge?

Not to get too off topic, but what do NWA pilots think of the possible merger with DAL?

Is the seniority integration going to be as ugly as green-red-blue thing?

What do the line pilots seem to expect or want; DOH, big fences, shrinking of the fleet. Just wondering what the scuttlebut is.

Do the NWA DC-9's have any glass instruments? (I mean EFIS--not the glass covering the round dials... ) TC

Would a NWA guy please PM me the link to the NWA page to download seniority/pref-up/etc. RADAR isn't doing it for me. Would like to see the current state of things.

Thanks - Baja.

Nope, they are fully Y2k compliant and vector equipped!

Ya know, the US spent millions of dollars to design a pen that would work in zero-g. The Soviets used a $0.02 pencil. Sometimes the old answers are the best for the job at hand.

Of course, in Soviet Russia, the pencil sharpens YOU!

Actually, there is the ACARS, and there's TCAS and, um, oh yea, the EGPWS, and the fuel gauges and pressurization are all new digital units, as well as a lot of underfloor items.

Pay raise??

A bit of a thread drift...can any NWA folks shed light into any possible contract negotiations resulting in a pay raise. I understand that pilots took a 40% pay cut. With profits coming up, is the union looking into reinstating the pay??

Heyas,

No, this is the "dark" side of NWA. Lot's of problems right now:

1) Some of the senior pilots are trying to welch on the targeted pension plan, which was ratified by the pilot group in exchange for all the give backs saving the DB plan for the senior guys. One group has failed in their lawsuit, and now those guys are trying to slow down the implementation.

2) The Red/Green show... The old NWA and Republic guys are still suing each other about who gets what aircraft.

3) Amazingly, the widebody group still runs the MEC. The pilot group has overwelmingly indicated that a more agressive stance with management is what they want, but the widebody guys, who really haven't taken that much of a haircut, don't want to rock the boat any. Because there is a number of small widebody bases, they are able to control the MEC, so we sit and do nothing.

Couple of questions for you.

1. I had no idea NWA / Republic fight is still going on. What do you mean by "who gets what aircraft"? Do NWA pilots and Republic pilots have aircraft 'fences' from the old merger deal?

2. Speaking of senior wide-body guys, are NWA guys trying to get fair representation for the junior / narrow-body folks? You know...the senior guys are not the only ones in the union...right??

Heyas Prop,

Well, it's like this. The old fences (AKA The Roberts Award) dropped dead 12/31/2006. But old habits/grudges die hard. Now that the fences are gone, the redbook pilots (old NWA), who had protected widebody seats for 20 years are grumpy that the relatively senior greenbook pilots (ex Republic) can now bid them unrestricted. There are lots of claims about how such and such aircraft are "replacements" for parked aircraft and other such nonsense.

The greenbook guys consider the matter over and done, and had dismantled their merger committee, while the redbook guys are still frothing at the mouth trying to carve out their nitches. But they managed to get the ear of Prater, which has forced the whole thing back. IMHO, both sides suck for dragging this out and wasting more money on it.

The other issue you bring up, the representation issue, has only recently become a BIG issue with the reelection of the MEC chairman. NWA has two small WB crewbases, SEA and ANC, which have 5 voting reps total (2 for SEA, and 3 for ANC, since ANC has SOs). With the MSP CA rep, who is married to a WB pilot (which means he is defacto WB), they essentially control the election of MEC officers, as well as the agenda.

This USED to be tempered by the fact that MSP and DTW had a extra rep each (SO rep), but since there are no more 3 man aircraft in those bases, that rep went away.

In this last election, reps who represent the numerical majority of pilots (say about 65 perent, the MSP FO rep and the DTW reps, as well as one of the MEM reps) voted for the guy that would have been more agressive with the company. But you don't elect MEC officers by roll call, only "senatorial", which means the small, WB bases can elect whoever they want. The guy who represented the more agressive stance against the company, and who got the votes representing %65 of the pilot group, was defeated by the guy the WB pilots wanted.

Since they are in control, you are going to have a pretty hard time changing the representational structure to something more balanced.

This has has led to the general thought that the Targeted Benefit Plan, potential merger issues, and in fact, most dealings with the company will not favor the mid-junior and/or NB pilots. It tends to make everyone in that group fairly grumpy, especially when those guys are in the majority.

Nu - Is this the same thing that was going on long ago? The "Mem-Rat?" Also - are any of you furloughees able to access Atlas? RADAR is telling me I need to use Pentry to gain ATLAS.

Thanks - Baja.

What is reserve like at NWA on the 9. Long / Short call? Min days off? How many typical days off per month for a guy living in base (MEM)?

Also, anyone based in MEM on the 9 care to comment on what I can expect as far as trips. 1,2,3,4, or 5 days etc...?

Thanks in advance

Reserve on the -9 isn't bad (at least for me living and based in MSP). I have not had to work more than 10 days a month. If you don't live in base or want to fly more, you can bid long call reserve and will be the first to get an open trip (unless it is a short notice). Trips vary the full range of 1-5 days.

Congrats and welcome aboard.
