Indianapolis, March 9 - Business travelers John Dart and Dan O'Sullivan fly out of Indianapolis often. They love nonstop flights.

Dart says he travels "nationwide. If I can go east, west, north or south that's a big advantage for us, a lot of time savings."

As of June 9 they'll have more options yet with Northwest Airlines starting nonstop service to Austin, Seattle, Denver and St. Louis. The new flights will make Northwest Indy's largest carrier with 52 flights a day to 21 destinations and the carrier using all gates in the A concourse.

Fay Beauchine says, "We at Northwest believe in Indianapolis and want to be the preferred carrier of this community."

The news comes eight months after Northwest, then a minor player, announced plans to double its service in Indianapolis and as once dominant ATA scales back to a mere four flights a day.

While Northwest insists "There are no plans to make it a hub," the expansion makes Indy Northwest's fourth largest market.

Indianapolis Mayor Bart Peterson thinks, "It's hard to see today as anything other than an unqualified success for Indianapolis, leisure travelers and the business community."

Airport officials say that while the expansion helps fill the gap left by ATA, there are still several cities they're targeting for non-stop service, foremost San Francisco, but also San Diego, Salt Lake City and St. Petersburg.

As for the impact on fares, Patrick Dooley with the Indianapolis Airport Authority says, "With 19 carriers here, airfare will continue to be low."

With the new nonstop to Denver, likely cutting fares there, it's all good news to frequent flyers.

"Yea, we're going to Dallas now and have trips planned to those other destinations later this year," says O'Sullivan.

This is supposedly just hot off the press. I think it was just announced here in Indy today. It'll be interesting to see what else will happen.

Well, it's more half & half. I'd imagine SEA and maybe DEN will for sure be mainline flights. I could see STL being flown by Airlink. As for AUS, I would guess that it's a coin toss. As far as NWA's other routes flown out of Indy, most of them are mainline jets(I think). Cities such as BDL, MCI, DFW, RDU, PHL, and DCA are mostly served by Airlink. I'm just guessing on some of these routes, so don't hold me to it. Perhaps an NWA or PCL/Airlink crew member could shed some more light on this subject.:)

I know they can fly whatever they want. That wasn't my point. Passengers tend to get ticked off when a route is advertised to be flown by a certain carrier and then turns out to be the code-sharer/regional affiliate. ESPECIALLY when they are counting on first class on a regular mainline jet and it ends up being an RJ/turboprop.

They should just label it for what it is. Since Schmooze pointed out it was a mix, it should read, "Northwest and Northwest Airlink announce new service to..... yada yada."

I forgot to point out that once these new four new flights are added, Northwest will have the entire Concourse A to themselves.

I know that SWA operates flights out of this concourse. Does any SWA pilot know what concourse they will move to once NWA takes over the concourse?

I'm not a SWA pilot, but the article I saw said SWA was going to be displaced to concource C where it will take over undisclosed space being vacated by ATA. Cheers...ExAF

This sounds correct as all cities to which the codeshare exsist btwn ATA and SWA they are (mainly ATA is but SWA in this case) moving to concourses where they can be next to each other so Pax can easily switch airplanes....

(warning - run on sentence)
