Tehran, Iran (AHN) - A Northwest Airlines DC-10 lands safely at their intended destination in Amsterdam, after making an emergency landing in Tehran.
A Northwest spokesman says an indicator detected a fire in the cargo hold in what turned out to be a “false alarm.”
The plane took off from Mumbai, India, en route to Amsterdam carrying 255 passengers and crew. During flight, an indicator light detected the false fire in a cargo hold, and the crew made the decision to land in Tehran.
A spokesman for the Iranian civil aviation authority says the plane landed, assessed the situation, purchased fuel, and was allowed to take off without incident. The plane was on the ground inside the Islamic Republic for an estimated seven hours before takeoff.
A spokesman for Northwest Airlines says, "A lot of the delay in Tehran was just in negotiating and purchasing fuel in a place that we normally do not divert to."
No injuries were reported, however, the plane arrived almost eight hours late.
