Northwest, KLM Consider Buying Boeing 7E7s >NWAC
By Elizabeth Souder, Of DOW JONES NEWSWIRES, Dow Jones
NEW YORK (Dow Jones)--Northwest Airlines Corp. (NASDAQ-NMS:NWAC) (NWAC) and partner KLM Royal Dutch Airlines (KLM.AU) are both considering buying new Boeing (NYSE:BA) 7E7 airplanes.

Northwest Chief Executive Richard Anderson told Dow Jones Newswires Monday the Minneapolis carrier is considering buying the new fuel-efficient airplane, but hasn't made a down payment. KLM is considering its own separate order, but also hasn't made a down payment.

Anderson and KLM CEO Leo van Wijk told Dow Jones that the airlines, which have a close partnership for international operations, may order the same 7E7 cockpit configuration and engines.

Both airlines announced at a press conference Monday they joined the SkyTeam Alliance, which is a club of nine airlines that can book each other's passengers on their flights.

Gerald Grinstein, chief executive of SkyTeam founding member Delta Air Lines Inc. (NYSE-AL) (DAL), said he envisions Alliance members one day jointly buying airplanes, but said there are no talks to buy airplanes together yet. He said the airplanes could be financed in various ways, such as one airline buying the planes and leasing the assets to others, or a third party buying the assets and leasing them out.

SkyTeam Alliance members fly both Boeing (NYSE:BA) and Airbus (Unknown:ABI.YY) (ABI.YY) planes.
