Superpilot,
I was told it was because of three things:
1) High cost of fuel
2) Economy slowing
3) Age 65
It'll be interesting to see what happens in the coming two weeks as far as any announcements on business plan, fleet plan, merger. I'm starting to believe they're going to go through with the merger regardless of what the pilots [don't] agree on.
i agree also.
Both have stopped classes, making it easier to have a date to have a cutoff for various reasons; seniority issues, bidding issues, HR issues, hiring process issues, contract issues for new hires, etc.
I am now going to have to decide whether I want to take the chance at having to commute from DTW to ANC for an "undetermined" amount of time,
there are no seat locks so you can bid out of it immediately as soon as an apa is run. or just defer and lose up to 80 more numbers (probably less as people will find other jobs, get disheartened and decide not to go, etc.). All hiring could stop for awhile (at both) if there's a merger, as they simply let attrition downsize the combined airline.
I would take the class and to be honest both companies are short staffed. If at any point the companies thought they were overstaffed all the would have to do is stop classes and like you said attrition will take care of itself. if you get into class you should be set. Either way you look at it there will be lots of movement in the next 10 years either way. Good luck in you decisions.
This career sucks.
It could be worse i guess
Its stressful i know but imho i think you will be sitting just fine.
