Currently there are 2 NWA 757s a day nonstop from MSP to ANC. In the Summer they usually bump it to 3 flights a day, and one to FAI also (which could connect to ANC on an Alaska Airlines flight). You can also fly to SEA and catch one of the 20 or so flights a day on Alaska Air to ANC. (We fly a 757 from SLC to ANC daily also)

A thoughtful, helpful post by the General; the power of Easter Sunday has prevailed.

Nicely done GL, I am impressed by the helpful and genuine post. Its nice not having a flamefest for once!! ;)

I heard a rumor that the April 7 class is all 747 ANC SO's. I also heard that all classes after that are postponed. Could someone please verify this?

I am only Darth Vader 92% of the time.....And, when it comes to your DC9 and the posts I give, I still think it is great that you are now at NWA, a good company and all. I am just razzing you a bit on your potential workload. I never said I didn't think you wouldn't get through it. You will just have to work a bit harder than the rest for a while. Once you have it, it will be easy.

i'm in the may 5 class, no word on any postponements......and no word on an all SO class either...

I just heard they are trying to move people into a april 28th class now, so you may get a call about that. I have heard guys from the april 21st class were asked to switch to april 28th and the rumor is everyone will get the panel. Thats second hand info though. fwiw

Superpilot,

Its not rumor, its fact. The Apr 21st class was moved entirely to Apr 28th, not folks being asked to move. See my other post on FI here. All the facts are there.

I know, i just give you a hard time for giving me a hard time. The workload isnt that bad on the DC9 and actually it keeps you busy so you dont get bored like on those FMS airplanes you talk about ;). I am just glad to be done with training :D

Thats what i thought but i didnt want to post it as fact because i got the info from others. Thanks for the clarification. Do you know the reason for the change?

Superpilot,

I was told it was because of three things:

1) High cost of fuel
2) Economy slowing
3) Age 65

It'll be interesting to see what happens in the coming two weeks as far as any announcements on business plan, fleet plan, merger. I'm starting to believe they're going to go through with the merger regardless of what the pilots [don't] agree on.

Both have stopped classes, making it easier to have a date to have a cutoff for various reasons; seniority issues, bidding issues, HR issues, hiring process issues, contract issues for new hires, etc.

I am now going to have to decide whether I want to take the chance at having to commute from DTW to ANC for an "undetermined" amount of time, or just defer and lose up to 80 more numbers (probably less as people will find other jobs, get disheartened and decide not to go, etc.). All hiring could stop for awhile (at both) if there's a merger, as they simply let attrition downsize the combined airline.

This career sucks.

How commutable is ANC if you live in MSP? I'm leaning towards wrenching on the 747 as opposed to FO on the DC9.

If you want the best of both worlds, bid the 747 SO ANC and then put in a temp bid for MSP 747 SO. You will get a hotel room(which you would not need) and per diem every day while sitting around in MSP. If you want block, your chances are better out of ANC right now.

I am now going to have to decide whether I want to take the chance at having to commute from DTW to ANC for an "undetermined" amount of time, there are no seat locks so you can bid out of it immediately as soon as an apa is run. or just defer and lose up to 80 more numbers (probably less as people will find other jobs, get disheartened and decide not to go, etc.). All hiring could stop for awhile (at both) if there's a merger, as they simply let attrition downsize the combined airline. I would take the class and to be honest both companies are short staffed. If at any point the companies thought they were overstaffed all the would have to do is stop classes and like you said attrition will take care of itself. if you get into class you should be set. Either way you look at it there will be lots of movement in the next 10 years either way. Good luck in you decisions.

This career sucks. It could be worse i guess ;) Its stressful i know but imho i think you will be sitting just fine.

I had heard that Age 65 would not affect NWA as much as others, due to the frozen pensions.

How many are staying beyond 60?

Its not effecting NWA as much, "as much" being the key words. There were a bunch of guys that bid that are were on the panel and bid back to a flying seat. If i had to guess the bigger factors where his number 1 and 2 reasons.

Put it this way retirements have surpassed the number of people that have been hired. Guys hired late last year were hired with seniority numbers in the 5300 range and guys hired in my class back in FEB were hired in the 5100's. Clear as mud? ;)
