747-200 S/O is one of the best jobs at NWA that you could have.
After being a 747 S/O for several years I can say that it was a job that allowed me to see the world, and was better than any F/O position that I could of held at that time.
Long layovers in far away places. kind of beats the 10 hour Flint layovers.
ANC itself is a world away if you commute it.

What is the average trip length for an ANC based SO?

Yeah, the F/E job is a blast from what my buddy says. hes been up there about a month now.

For those of you still in the training pipeline and close to the school house, has there been any talk or rumor of the new hire classes being trimmed or slowed to follow suit with some of the other companies are doing?

I know that another one of my buddies was hired into the "pool" last week. he was told to expect a class in aug-sept.

I am not in the training center anymore but i know people in the class that started Monday and know others that have firm class dates next month and as far as they know the classes haven't changed.fwiw

Don't know if it's still working that way, but many used to get one 12 day orient trip at the beginning of the month followed by a 12 day trip at the end of the next month. Result = full schedule plus 1 month off between trips.:) And the job itself is basically deadheading between 24+ hour layovers.

Don't forget the 3 pilots per month that come directly from Mesaba. If they do start reducing the size of the class those in the pool may be in a little longer as the Mesaba guys don't wait in the pool...

The word put out, before the merger talk really heated up, when they announced the draw down to 68 DC9's by years end, was that they would be hiring into a pool, and reducing training classes over the summer, to resume at the normal rate again in the fall.

The rational was to absorb via attrition (bid outs to other aircraft) the reduction in staffing on the DC9 for the fall. Part of the method for doing in this is to reduce training over the summer and utilize DC9 instructors to augment line flying in the summer months.

There are no plans that anyone is aware of for furloughs, and the use of IP's for summer augment will negate for the most part any displacements as the fleet shrinks. Sounds like things will be slowing down a bit like everywhere else.

Of course there have been no announcements concerning any specifics of fuel price induced adjustments as of yet.

How commutable is ANC if you live in MSP? I'm leaning towards wrenching on the 747 as opposed to FO on the DC9.

Currently there are 2 NWA 757s a day nonstop from MSP to ANC. In the Summer they usually bump it to 3 flights a day, and one to FAI also (which could connect to ANC on an Alaska Airlines flight). You can also fly to SEA and catch one of the 20 or so flights a day on Alaska Air to ANC. (We fly a 757 from SLC to ANC daily also)

Bye Bye--General Lee

I am not sure how commutable ANC is, but depending on when you start, there is a chance you could get MSP soon. There are a few junior SO's that got awarded MSP on the last APA.
