"SWAPA was among about a dozen aviation labor groups gathering this past week for a strategic planning meeting and news conference in Oslo, Norway to stand against plans for a Norwegian low-cost carrier to operate in the U.S. and Europe under a "flag of convenience."

Norwegian Air Shuttle, through its subsidiary Norwegian Air International, has applied for foreign carrier status from the DOT as well as an operating certificate from Ireland -- even though the carrier has no plans to serve Ireland. The carrier plans to use Thai pilots under contract from a Singapore employment agency in order to avoid stricter labor and safety regulations as well as gain access to EU and US markets.

SWAPA joined fellow pilots from the Air Lines Pilots Association (ALPA); European Cockpit Association; Norwegian Pilots Union; International Federation of Air Line Pilots' Associations and Allied Pilots Association (American Airlines) along with the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA, Transportation Trades Department of AFL-CIO and other aviation employee groups.

SWAPA has filed a letter on the official docket stating our position opposing Norwegian's DOT application and is working with the international coalition to oppose the Norwegian operations plan."
