Northwest gives Delta merger nod: report

March 28, 2008 2:58 PM ET

All Reuters news
CHICAGO (Reuters) - Executives at Northwest Airlines have proposed that Northwest and Delta Air Lines go ahead with a planned merger, the Wall Street Journal reported on Friday.
Citing people familiar with the matter, the Journal said on its Web site that Northwest also has suggested offering pilots less-generous terms than previously.
Northwest shares were up 6.62 percent at $9.02 following the report. Delta shares were up 4.55 percent at $8.73.

The Delta and NWA pilots knew this would happen. Investors and management could care less how those two groups figure out combining their lists.

Anderson would be stupid to reverse what he told the DAL pilots earlier. This is a service business and unhappy pilots can seriously hurt performance. Anderson should be aware of that. Steeland at NWA is just interested in his big merger-related BONUS.

Moroni Metro gave me a sticker a few months back that said, "Happy Crews Save Gas...." No doubt about it!

If anyone who has been in the business for more than 5 years and still believes that management cares about unhappy pilots is also going to wake up very unhappy Christmas morning and realize that all they got was a subscription to the Jelly of the Month Club.

It is pretty easy to see this was probably a ploy from management in an attempt to pressure the 2 sides to form that seniority list. The funny thing is, is that if you look at the majors side of this forum, they are biting it, they are arguing like little girls

The thing is, it is in NW pilot's interests to merge. NW won't survive without it, and a job at Delta is better than being on the street. They can play tough if they want, but management has all the cards on this one.

A Delta Capt. sat on my jumpseat the other day, and he said that the NW group is not budging at all, and they want all of their senior guys at the top of the list. I'm sure a NW captain would say the opposite, but who knows.

UNHAPPY PILOTS???? Dude what world have you been living in? Pilots are creatures of habit. With pensions and wages lost over the last 7 years, pilots have had opportunities to rise up and stand firm against gutting of benefits. NO, we are selfish, greedy creatures that look at the now. This is a service business, yeah and what does that mean? If you are saying that pilots are going to create some type of chaos, this ain't Europe and this generation is to scared to make a stand. In the last 10 years there has been only one pilot group in the US to take a stand and that was Comair. No other pilot group has taken a stand to protect their scope, benefits, pensions, and wages.....not one! Our society has become so passive. We care more about Britney Spears, Paris Hilton, and Brad Pitt, then we do about the real issues we face in this country. We would rather ignore our problems than face them head to head. Look how we've let Captains authority be eroded. Gate agents are in charge of the airplane while the door is still open. But you let an APU catch a fire while that door is open and believe me the FAA will be drug testing your butt. Your license and your way of making a living is on the line, but we will not stand up and protect it. What are ALPA, APA, SWAPA, NPA, and the Teamsters all doing about it? Nothing! This is a service industry and upset pilots in the US means absolutely nothing if the last 7 years have told us anything.

ASA Aviator,
There is a world outside of ATL. Northwest will do much better in the future alone then Delta would. One look at the financials will tell you that. At $95 dollars a barrel NWA will post a $43mil profit for the year. Delta $260ish loss. Our profit margins are higher and yields are better as well.

That may be true. I don't really know. In any case, I think it would be in the interests of the pilots to find a compromise. Delta/NWA would be a powerful airline.

The Delta pilots also said the PID was a DOH seniority grab.....take anything a Delta pilot says with a grain of salt....The truth is somewhere in the middle....

from an article from Reuters.....

"Basically, unless Delta management has a change a heart, I don't think they're going to do anything without the support of their pilots," said Calyon Securities analyst Ray Neidl.

"It shows that people don't want it to die and they'll keep trying things, but I don't think it puts us any closer."

Bye Bye--General Lee

General you sound a bit naive posting that over and over. I don't want this to go thru, but to think the pilots of either airline have a say is a fantasy.. It will go thru if wall street cronies can make money. Somethings got to pay the Bentley leases.

Yes, sir, you are so correct! Don Carty walked away from AMR with about $15 million. Leo left with about the same amount.

The question for the General is:

How much will the new CEO walk away with? He could care less whether you are happy long term or not! How many different airlines did Stephen Wolf work for, and how much money did he accumulate over time during his short and multiple stays? Just ask a North Central or Southern Airways Pilot, who became Republic Pilots, who became Northwest Pilots, and who will soon become Delta/NorthWest Orient Pilots?

General, your sky is about to be falling!

Bye, Bye! P.S.--General, after all this happens, you are going to be a buck private, and in a different army!

Steenland is already chanting, "Make Delta, My Delta!" and show me the money ($15 M)!

This coming from a guy who headed up a lawsuit against ALPA claiming it was to benefit the good of all rj pilots!

Do you honestly think NWA cares about the best interest of any work groups? Look at the comapny history and you will see continuous abuse.

The merger will go through regardless of what the pilots want. Just like anything else in the last 7 years the option for DL or NWA pilots will be "take it or leave it". It will be up to the pilots to grow a pair and stand up for what they want. If they don't, we all have an amazing future to look forward to.

I imagine it will be as nasty as the US Airways/America West integration.
