Hey all. I'm looking for a good FBO in North Central to Central Ohio to finish up my CFI. Here's my current situation. I started at FlightSafety Academy in Sept. 01, I graduated the CIME program and got my SE add-on. My wife got a good job offer back in our home town in Ohio so we moved back and the offer fell through. So for the last 2 years we've been scraping by trying to make it. Next summer she'll graduate college and hopefully get a descent job with descent pay. Since my graduation I have not had the money to get in the air, but I hope to after my wife gets a job next summer. I'm starting to do my homework and look for some FBO's around and see what they have to offer. If any of you have any experience or know of anyone who has been through some of them please let me know. I'm looking for anything from Akron to Columbus part 61 or 141 school. I greatly appreciate it. Thanks in advance.

Flight Safety Student keying in...

Hey man,

I am from Canton and am currently going to Flight Safety now. While I was back home I was Flying out of CAK with a REALLY good instructor named Pete Welden with Jim Long Aviation. CAK is a good Class Charlie Airspace with easy I 77 access and the traffic there is usually pretty upscale and light on volume there are two close by VORs, Briggs and Akron, that you can work with. Pete has like 6000 hours and used to fly air Cargo for Castle Aviation on the North side of the field. Give him a call and tell him RJ sent you. Dont have the number off hand. sorry.

I just started a month or so ago at American Winds at KAKR. I've had a great experience so far with my PVT, for what it's worth (trying to get it done before the sun disappears for the winter & move on to inst.). Their aircraft are older but look presentable and well maintained with newer cosmetics and engines. The CFIs seem happy to teach & enthusiastic, and I get a good vibe while I'm there.
There was another thread about NeOhio schools awhile back as well, may want to check that out as well. Feel free to PM me if you have any ??s

PM me for more info, i go to school in NE Ohio flying related i like to think...lol...what town do you live in? that would help some, and i'd say check out wadsworth, county, or medina...

hey Boots Randolph, who are you flying with at Winds? PM me and let me know...

Look into Airsports at CAK, same building as Ultimate Jet Charters. New and impressive equipment and a pretty solid group of instructors. A little pricey but not overly disgusting in my opinion, they also have an outfit at BKL.

I would be careful about some of the smaller airports in the area since mx has been questionable at best at some of those mom and pop flight schools/operations.

Am Air at YNG also has some decent equipment with a gorgeous Seneca with a 530, new leather interior, etc, that recently came online or so I have been told. They also have a couple of "newer" C172R's, C172P, C152's, etc. They have a flying club that is in place that will give you hourly breaks on the aircraft and instruction if you become a member.

You also have Crosswind Aviation at 4G4 which is to the south of YNG which has a few planes that are reasonable per hour to rent at a "wet" price.

pm me if you have any additional questions or comments.

Thats where I did my private...some of the planes are real nice...I will say I never really felt the plane was going to fall apart around me, which is a positive...

I don't believe the Seneca is available for instruction/rent...I'm pretty sure its for "share holders/owners only"...can't confirm though... Their 182 was also like that for a while, anyone know if they still have it? Is it still owners only?

On the other hand, you could do your CFI in the Bonanza...pretty plane...I've been lusting for some time in it since getting my PPL...but I'll just have to wait...Hopefully when I get home I can get out for a checkout in that baby...but for $135 an hour (I'm told its Tach time in the Banana) I'm not sure if I couldn't get more use out of the 172R unless I'm looking for complex time...........anyway nice plane...

Good CFIs there...the guy that did mine is no longer there...moved on to better things...you might try Joey, Mike, or Dom...all nice guys that are fun to be around...DPE is a little pricy though $250/ride(cash only)...ouch...My private ride was all of an hour and I don't think the oral was more than 30-40 minutes...good pay day...of course if this is your initial CFI then I guess that wouldn't matter...

Not sure who can do the CFI instruction (the whole time requirements thing) but I'm sure you'd find someone there...

Good Luck and GO BROWNS!

thanks for all your replies. I'm still keeping my options open and getting phone numbers around...yada, yada, yada. I probably won't start until next spring so I'm in no hurry, so if you know of anywhere else drop me a line. Again, I appreciate the help.

For what it's worth, I'm from Ashland (3G4)
