Small plane crashes near U.P. prison; 4 from Wisconsin killed
KINCHELOE, Mich. (AP) -- A small plane crashed Monday in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, killing all four people on board and narrowly missing buildings at a state prison.
The twin-engine, noncommercial plane crashed near Chippewa Correctional Facility about 9:30 a.m., said Russ Marlan, a Department of Corrections spokesman.
No one at the prison was injured, but the pilot and three passengers, all from Wisconsin, were killed, state police said. Their identities were not released because their families had not been notified, police said.
The plane hit a buffer fence surrounding the outermost rim of the prison, Marlan said. The fence is located about 20 feet outside the prison's secure perimeter.
