I don't know if it's official yet, but it's my understanding that the FAA is going to eliminate the term "Pilot-Not-Flying" (PNF) from its lexicon. Apparently, it sends the wrong message about responsibility in the cockpit. After all, if a pilot isn't flying, he might be sleeping, reading a magazine, etc.

Therefore, from now on, the pilot who is not the "Pilot Flying" (PF) will be referred to as the [drumroll] "Pilot Monitoring" (PM)!

Don't you all feel much safer? This reminds me of ALPA changing "Regional Jet" to "Small Jet." Doesn't the FAA have anything more important to focus on?

Your tax dollars at work...

Any time you see the FAA doing something like this, you can bet it is in response to an enforcement action that they lost in court. Probably because some smart lawyer pointed out that his client was the "pilot not flying", so how could he be held accountable for what the other pilot, the one doing the flying, had done?

Just like regs are accident driven, the feds are always behind the power curve.
