I know pilots at major and national airlines who were hired in the last few years with DUIs-recent DUIs. By PILOTYIPS' flawed logic, one might recommend that an aspiring pilot go out and get a DUI since drinking and driving have little to do with flying. After all, it's your flying that counts. I regularly recommend to folks with trouble in their past to keep plugging, but a lack of a degree is one of the easiest things to overcome...just get one!pilotyip said:I know of pilots hired at NWA, UAL, DAL, Spirit, AirTran, Jet Blue and FedEx without degrees.
EXACTLY!pilotyip said:
If you go to college on line and get a degree from Bumbble Bee State in lawn cutting you will check the box on your application. In the mean time you are working in your profession building time and producing a fantasic resume.

Hey Dorothy, we're not in Kansas anymore... Times have changed... Things are FAR more competitive than when these guys (whom most are retired by now) were hired...pilotyip said:Of the pilots who won WWII very few had college degrees, the same in Vietnam in the Army helo drivers. In both cases these guys did one heck of a job.

How? If so many employers want a degree, how will you get those jobs? Besides, without the degree your resume will not be that fantastic.pilotyip said:In the mean time you are working in your profession building time and producing a fantasic resume.
Times were different back in WWII. Not that many members of the population had college. Chuck Yeager did not have a degree. But, nowadays, college is open to nearly anyone, and degrees are expected. Therefore, a degree, from an accredited school, even Bumble Bee State, has to be part of your armament and repertoire.Of the pilots who won WWII very few had college degrees, the same in Vietnam in the Army helo drivers.

So far this year it has taken me to, HNL, Marshall Islands, Guam, Cambodia, Pataya Beach Thailand, Japan, Germany, Belgium,Turkey, Iceland, Goose Bay,Kosovo, Macedonia,Kuwait via Iraq many times,Paris,BDL,RDU, MKJS,IAD,MIA, DEN, SFO,TPA. Now I sit at home with a broken tooth waiting for the dentist. Now last year..........
Not doubting you, but what's the source of those numbers?Dash Trash said:Look, you can’t argue with the numbers. The fact is that 38% of the people in the U.S. have a bachelor’s degree or higher. 87% of the pilots hired at the majors in the last 10 years have a 4 year degree.
Reluctantly crouched at the starting line
Engines pumping and thumping in time.
The green light flashes, the flags go up.
Churning and burning they yearn for the cup.
They deftly manuver and muscle for rank,
Fuel burning fast on an empty tank.
Reckless and wild they pour through the turns.
Their prowess is potent and secretly stern.
As they speed through the finish the flags go down.
The fans get up and they get out of town.
The arena is empty except for one man,
Still driving and striving as fast as he can.
The sun has gone down and the moon has come up,
And long ago somebody left with the cup.
But he's driving and striving and hugging the turns,
And thinking of someone for whom he still burns.
(chorus)
He's going the distance,
He's going for speed.
She's all alone (all alone) all alone in her time of need.
Because he's racing and pacing and plotting the course.
He's fighting and biting and riding on his horse.
He's going the distance. (aaaaawww aaawww)
No trophy, no flowers, no flashbulbs, no line-
He's haunted by something he can not define.
Bowel shaking earthquakes, of doubt and remorse.
Assail him impale him with monster truck force.
In his mind he's still driving; still making the grade.
She's hoping in time that her memory will fade.
Because he's racing and pacing and plotting the course.
He's fighting and biting and riding on his horse.
The sun has gone down and the moon has come up.
And long ago somebody left with the cip
But he's striving and driving and hugging the turns,
And thinking of someone for whom he still burns.
But, Yip, that is you and your company. I submit that how you hire is not reflective of airline hiring at large.pilotyip said:So do not say the degree is the only way to a major. We hire pilots with and without degrees based upon who they are, how easy they are to get along with, and can they become Captains. We are getting some great guys, with and without degrees.

You guys can argue against the college degree all you want...while I'm going the distance, I'm going for speed!!! I'm racing and pacing and plotting the course. I'm fighting and biting and riding on my horse. I'm going the distance! He's going the distance,
