Finally got my application, looks like it will take a bit of time to fill it out. Does anyone think it really matters if you type or use a pen? I mean who has a typewriter anymore these days!?

I wrote in my neatest hand writing, which still looked like chicken scratch. I made the mistake of letting my fiancee write some of it because she has such neat handwriting, but she botched up my flight times and i had to white it out which made it look even worse. Got the interview e mail 5 days later and the job the day after the interview. Good luck

Sent out an email to my wifes book club and found a typewritter to use. Spent the time and sent in a typed application. My experience is that all the little things add up and may help push you over the fense if there ever is any question on if they should hire you or not.

If no typewriter.. use a pencil lightly till you get it right then overwrite with pen and erase.

I made copies of the application pages, and used the copies to make sure I was putting down the correct info...when satisfied, I transferred the info to the actual application...this especially works well with the flight time grid.

Did you mean "push you over defense" or "push you over the fence"? I hope that typewriter had spell check!

This is what I did as well. It takes a little longer to do a draft first but I did catch some mistakes that would have looked bad on the application.

My friend was hired at NJA before I was. When he was doing his app he called me to ask if I had a typewriter. He had checked every office store in town with no luck. I knew I'd had a Smith-Corona in the closet at one time but I figured my wife had made me get rid of it years ago (I'm the pack rat, she wants stuff cleared out every few years). To my surprise it was still buried in the closet and still worked great. It even has a 50K word spell checker and the ribbon has the white erase stuff on the lower half so it's easy to make corrections. I still copied the app and filled the copy in with pencil before I typed the real thing.

If anyone is in the CLT area and needs to borrow it send me a PM. It's back in the closet gathering dust again.

Also, I think some libaries have typewriters you can use, check that out too.

Avoid the white out, it runs over the printed lines on the form. Try correction tape. It can be applied neatly in most cases and doesn't look like a mess. My two cents, but it worked for me. I also made copies and and filled out the form completely, so I could see how everything would fit in the spaces. Good luck.

I filled out my app in pen. Take your time and read carefully before filling out. One got ya was a block that ask for birth month. I put my full birthday and then realized my mistake when the next block asks for birth day.

I filled out the time matrix in pencil and left it that way.

I was signed up for the DFW Air inc conference so I made a point of taking my filled out app and presented it to them at the conference. One of the guys there (I dont recall his name) reviewed it and said it looked great and that he would contact me for an interview next week. With this said, I wouldn't get too wrapped around the axle about finding a type writer.

I will follow up with my post if an interview comes my way.... One extra comment after talking with Lindsey Lang? at Southwest... She said that they had reviewed their hiring mins over Christmas, and they had decided to start calling people who they may have not considered to be competitive in the last few years... Overall, the comments and conference made me feel like we have finally turned the corner and are now in a full blown hiring mode...

Red crayon, I used my sharpest Crayola brand crayon. Most of HR is female. I would recommend spraying your app with Old Spice for the finishing touch.

When I got my application in the mail and the cover letter said neatly printed or typed I checking around for a way to get it typed. Couldn't find anyone to do it, but I did find a typewriter at Goodwill for $15. Went to Kinkco's and had them make a copy of the application for me to practice my typing skills.

Well the practice copy turned out so well and the Kinkco's copy looked exactly like the original, so that was the one I mailed in.

Got the entire application packet back about two weeks later saying that NetJets only accepted their original application....no copies. I'm sure most guys fill in the original by hand and as long as it's fairly neat I don't think typing it is an issue.

For anyone out there who might have lost their scan flying glass...Microsoft Flight Sim 2004 ($30), a control yoke from CH Products ($100), and a Citation II add-on from Eaglesoft ($25) will sure be money well spent for the NetJets checkride.

Military "types"....

I got my typewriter from the PDO (Property disposal Office) on the military base I was on.

Been a few years though......

I think they realize most of us are one level below a doctor when it comes to writing skills (just look at this board).

I don't think they would "throw out" a person with the skills we need based on the world wide shortage of typewriters.

I thought I was slick by scanning the application into a PDF file and filling it out in Acrobat (you have to have the full blown Acrobat, not the reader to do this).

But as was gmorgan's experience, I got it back stating that it had to be the original application, no copies, scans, etc.....

So I just filled it out in my best (crappy) handwriting and I still got hired.

Don't get too wrapped around the axle about it.

My sister-in-law works for Office Depot and she told me that they had typewriters and that their return policy is VERY lax..they'll take back anything, even if it's been opened and returned within the last 60 days or so. I went and put the $120 Smith Corona on the AMEX and one week later, brought it back, no questions asked.
