Colo. man charged with rampage on flight
March 9, 2005

ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- A man denied alcohol during a United Airlines flight went on a rampage, breaking tray tables and other equipment, the FBI said Wednesday.

Brian A. Casias, 35, has been charged with interfering with the flight crew on Flight 711 from Denver to Anchorage.

Casias, of Commerce City, Colo., was heard swearing as he boarded the flight Tuesday, and the plane's captain advised him that he would not be served alcoholic beverages.

When a flight attendant denied Casias' request for a drink, he allegedly threw his tray of food down and spat repeatedly on the floor, the FBI said.

Casias allegedly ripped the phone off the back of the seat and broke two tray tables, throwing them to the floor, the FBI said.

Casias also is accused of urinating on the floor of the lavatory, where he allegedly broke a handicapped bar and a changing table. He also is accused of swearing repeatedly and of smoking several cigarettes on the plane.

Casias, who was arrested by airport police and the FBI when the plane landed, remained in custody and was scheduled to appear before a federal magistrate Thursday.

Why was he denied alcohol?
Probably because he was drunk we he boarded and shouldn't have been alowed on the plane to begin with.

Having said that, I hope he get heavily sanctioned, and that the airline takes a smaller one.

I'm a little curious why he was allowed to at so misbehavingly without having been restrained. Especially the part about smoking several cigarettes... that shouldn't have been allowed to happen.

Just my thoughts...

Agreed. I also see some very long drives in his future. What's the drive time from Denver to Anchorage in March? Eight days? Too bad his fellow pax didn't lay a beatin' on him.

No to hijack but we were talking about a situation like this in class. What would you capatin types do? Assuming a air rage or treat type passenger. Would you make a PA call and enlist the passengers help?

And in this day and age, should the Captain leave the cockpit to try and deal with this person one on one - like they use to do in the airlines many, many years ago?

Excellent question. Not a captain of anything, and I didn't sleep at a holiday in express last night, but...

I'd probably make a PA call for everyone to sit, buckle and a reminder that its against federal law to not listen to a crew member. Then asked the FAs to find the 6 biggest guys she could find and move them to seats around him with instructions to duct tape him to the seat if needed.

When the cigarett got lit up, I would have been on the ground at the next suitable spot, wherever that is. Not necessarily an "emergency" but...it could very well have become one.

Hopefully he won't be flying or driving anywhere for a long long time.

Oh User...I don't think so...the guys up front are the last line of defense. Keep the door locked, declare an emergency if necessary, have the FA get as many big guys as needed to resolve anysituations in the back, but no...I don't think that door should open in flight for that.

This guy could have been a 300/lb and built like a **CENSORED****CENSORED****CENSORED****CENSORED** brick house. If he’s not the Taliban, and just some drunk dip sh!t. Why escalate the situation let him drink, smoke, and get arrested when the plane lands. The Capt playing Mr. Hero would be stupid. IMO.

MINI and I agree WOW

Are you talking about the short, fat, size 6 penny loafer captains like the ones they got at NWA, or the taller, bacon faced, 12 biscuit eating ones like they got over at UAL? If so, it's probably better if they stay up front and drive the plane.
