Yeah, I posted that story on another thread 80 responded to 2 days ago...

Lots of people here new to aviation I guess who don't remember that, even though it was only about 2 or 3 years ago.

....////....

To 80for80 old fart.Am a Pinnacle Airline CA ,proud to be.Its one of the best
regional airlines, you base all your facts around pay and money, are you an airline pilot!!!!? where have you been!!!!?..

One of them went directly from PCL to Jalways, the other was from Japan and got pissed off when he went for upgrade but never got recommended for the checkride.

Never entered his record as a failure or that he even went through upgrade class, but he quit in disgust anyway. Went back to Japan then got the job at Jalways but I don't know if he did anything in the interim.

Nice guy, although some of the other Captains didn't like flying with him at all, he and I had several good trips together. He was just fine as long as you weren't disrespectful.

Haven't heard much from either one since they got hired there. Jalways wanted me to interview a couple of years ago but I have no interest in tripling my cost of living while cutting my income by 66% with no guarantee of upgrade. The only international carrier I was interested in was Cathay and I had the interview lined up when I got the call for airTran. Easy choice when you have a wife and young kids. I'll miss not flying internationally but them's the choices we make to be home more often. :)

Interesting. I haven't met them yet. Did they come direct from PCL, or via another airline?

There is one of our former Check Airman In or about to start O. E. now.

Lear,

Don't worry too much about the Cathay thing. They really aren't looking for Americans anyway. You made and excellent decision by not wasting your time/money.

Tripling cost of living: True.
Cutting income 66%: True.
No guarantee for upgrade: False. The upgrade time is about 3 years.

yeah, GoJets is definitely beneath just about anyone.

But both dont have block or better, which is an embarrassment.

If you do everything the "proper way".

Last I checked, there is no "guarantee" for upgrade at Jalways, you can be bypassed if you're not believed to be a team player and your contract not renewed.

I don't like walking on egg shells for my career, too much b.s. Unfortunately, unions are necessary evils in this day and age of aviation. They do protect the few bad eggs that get through the process, but they also protect the vast majority of decent people who once in a while piss off the wrong person.

Ahh, I see. You are somewhat correct. But it's not an issue of simply pissing off the wrong person. If you are a disciplinary problem, then you might get bypassed. But if you show up on time and do what is expected of you, then you won't get bypassed.

IMO, there should be no "guaranteed" upgrades. Having worked with unions and without unions, I believe the biggest threat to safety is moving some knucklehead to the left seat who is not prepared simply because the union requires it. If someone depends on the union for career advancement, then that person should not serve as PIC, meaning, someone could be entirely weak in judgment and decision making, but when their number is up, they go to the left seat. Anyone can pass a sim check and LOE in the controlled environment of simworld, but that doesn't mean they're ready to be captain.
