Ok, quick question for you guys who have been logging time much longer than I have. With my newly minted instructor ticket I decided it was time to replace my old logbook with one that actually has a column for time "As flight instructor" (never thought I would make it that far when I bought the first one). Anywho, my question is, when switching to a new logbook is it standard practice to put all the times from my old logbook in the "Amt. Forwarded" line on page one. Or is it standard to start the new logbook from scratch and just add whatever was in the old logbook when I need to fill out totals. It seems I would forward the time so that the new one was most accurate, but I could be wrong. Obviously either is technically fine, just wanted to get a feel for if there is a standard practice.

Thanks,
cale

I started the new book with every flight rewritten from the beginning. Mainly for historical and nostalgic reasons. I've got everything I've ever flown in there. When you go to do other ratings, your 8710 might be tricky if you have to go back to the other book and figure your times in a particular aircraft. In the remarks column, I wrote, "For remarks see logbook #1". It's now on a bookshelf somewhere in case someone ever needs it.

I put mine in the amt. forwarded column...then went from there.

Basically, I just didn't feel like trying to get all of the signatures and endorsements that I would have needed in re-writing....however...

weekendwarrior's idea of putting "for remarks see logbook 1"...I like....

If I would have thought of that, perhaps I would have done differently.....

Of course, I also have an "electronic logbook" that has an 8710 print out that I can use if I need to find info for the 8710...

I think its personal preference...

Personally, I'd finish out that old logbook first. You can always make an additional column by cutting into your remarks section a little. Use a ruler. It's really amazing what can be done with a pencil these days...isn't technology wonderful?

When starting a new log, just put the finishing totals from the old log at the bottom of the page as time carried forward.

It wasn't just the column thing... Given that my first logbook has all endorsements and examiner sign offs for my private, instrument, commercial and initial CFI I feel it is better off at home or in a safe deposit box than living day to day in my flight bag. That may be overanal of me, but what they hey.

The thing about the signoffs is once you pass your commercial test, you will no longer need the signoffs because it is known that you had them to take the commercial test (works for CFI, private, and instrument too). Only problem is about the high performance, high altitude and tailwheel endorsements (complex is covered in the commercial test so you are good there).

Personally, I think that NO logbook should live day to day in your flightbag unless you're receiving flight training and the instructor needs to sign it. Mine only come out of my safe when I update or have to refer to them for something. I keep my time in a little crew log, then put it in LogbookPro on my laptop, and then whenever I get a chance, I sit down with both and update my real logbook. When I was flight instructing, I just kept track of the days activities on a little piece of scrap paper or a notebook, and updated my real logbook when I got home at night. Whatever works, but if you carry your logbook around with you when you fly every day, its going to look like a piece of crap in a month- not to mention you risk losing it somehow.

This last post brings up a good question. I have a Jeppesen professional pilot logbook that doesn't fit in my sporty logbook cover. Any suggestions on a logbook case for the Jeppesen log? Thanks in advance.

The Sporty's logbook cover WILL work with a bit of persuasion. My jepp logbook fits beautifully. Try a piece of wood cut to the same size as the jepp book and really squeeze it in there......then wait a few weeks. Worked like a charm!

logbooks

Are you really keeping your logbook in a safe? Is there a large blackmarket for logbooks out there...mine is on my toolbox with a cup of coffee and a box of safety wire on it...that ought to keep the theives away from it....

Keeping your logbook safe is a good idea. Not so much thieves, but recreating logs after they've been destroyed in a fire, the dog got hold of them, a three year old decided to experiment to test the reactivity of molasses and cool-aid on acid free paper, or whatever...takes the whimsey right out of a sunny afternoon. It's no fun, and can be a real chore. Many keep their logbooks safe because they're valueable, and hard to replace.

As for a logbook cover for the Jeppesen Professional log, try Cencal. I believe they market one specifically to fit that book. I believe one was also available in Sporty's. (might be the same one). I haven't obtained one, but I had a student a few years ago who did, and it fit fine. I believe Sporty's also sells a leather one for that logbook (measure it and compare it to the measurements in the catalog to be certain), if you really want to be fancy.

I think mine's in a backpack somewhere...

You know you are right about it being a pain to recopy it...but I can't remember anytime anyone has asked to see my endorsements...out side of a checkride...I guess if I ever have to go to a interview and have some acne riddled "interviewer" grill me about my times not adding up or how come I never got signed off to take my private pilot checkride....well...managing a Home Depot might look even better.

And if, say, the logbook is eaten by my pooch or the neighbors kid takes a dump on it...I will go get a new one...copyover my times and leave a note in there with a picture of the dog gnawing on it or the kid smearing goo all over it. If they don't have a sense of humor I can't imagine liking working there. Then again...the attractive wage of 19.23 an hour keeps me away alot of interviews...that and my musky odor. =)

"Are you deficating into that cantelope?"
