I'm not saying it's a sure thing by any means. But it would seem to be the only chance for survival here.

The politicians met with the Germans and they are committed to the UPS deal. No merger is going to save the DHL contract. ABX will have to survive as a charter carrier in MIA, LAX and everywhere else we can get work....

Go check out the CNBC thread!

Yeah, I saw that. Old Mullen looked really confident, didn't he? I really liked it when the interviewer asked why DHL was getting in bed with his competitor, and he said that they weren't, they were just using UPS lift to move packages to the stations for delivery. ROFLMAO!! I think it's possible we're going to see some more cooperation out of this UPS/DHL deal. Why wouldn't UPS use DHL in Europe and Asia? Or buy DHL outright in a few years? UPS has tried off and on to do that for years. And before UPS'ers say "we have Scope to stop that", I'll share something with you. Scope isn't all it's cracked up to be. I wouldn't count on that at all. I don't think these guys are through screwing up companies yet. Good luck to all!

You and I share the same thoughts hvy. I just posted a similar response in the CNBC thread while you were typing yours.

Anyone use the DOJ consumer tip line yet? Sounds like anticompetitive business practices, doesn't it? :smash:

Aren't you mixing up DHL with TNT? I didn't know UPS ever tried to buy DHL, I don't think even those deep pockets would be deep enough to buy DHL...

18+ years ago UPS came within minutes of buying DHL. At the last hour Hillbloom rejected the offer.

"18+ years ago UPS came within minutes of buying DHL. At the last hour Hillbloom rejected the offer."

That's the first time I've heard that. There's another version of the story out there which has DHL agreeing to an offer of 1.1 billion from UPS. However, when UPS started looking into how DHL was structured and how they did business overseas (numerous subcontractors, cumshaw deals, etc.) they decided to back out. All of UPS' business dealings are conducted scrupuously "above board"

That may be one of the reasons why DHL and UPS are getting into this deal together. As long as the brands remain separate, UPS avoids challenges to it's scope clause and is immunized from any shady dealings DHL is involved in overseas.

You were there at the time Jim, so was I. Sorry, your version don't hold water. I remember it very well.

No, I wasn't there. That's why I called it a "story." I got my info from a person who did some of the business analysis for UPS. She knows what was reported to UPS management, but not why the deal fell through.

There are only a few people who know definitively why the deal wasn't consumated. One is dead and the rest aren't talking.

Well, except for one...

Whatever Jim. BTW, is the FAA ever gonna give you back your licenses?

Ummmmm...dude...I don't want to tell you how to live your life or anything, but this would be a REAL good time for you to stop worrying about everybody else's job, and start worrying about your own...
