New Destinations For CAL

This plan had been in the works for almost a year now. With the domestic market fares dwindling to the white blood cell count of an anemic, post chemotherapy whino, CAL continues to look towards more international flying with more and more new destinations.

1) Applied for Newark - Shanghi route, Jan 2006

2) Applied for Newark - Bejing route, Jan 2005

3) Applied for Newark - Moscow route, ????

4) Applied for Newark - Lagos route, ????

5) Announced Newark - Bristol route

6) Announced Newark - Belfast route

7) Announced Newark - Berlin route

8) Announced Newark - Hamburg route

9) Several more cities are also in the works but without certainty are

Newark - Prague, Newark - Copenhagen, Newark - Johanasburg,

Newark - Reykjavik and possibly a few others.


Several consequences of this expansion are inevitable. CAL is recalling and is doing so on an expidited basis. New training instructors are being hired on the 737 and 757/767 fleets. Aircraft utilization on all fllet types is being increased. The need for more aircraft to support this flying is a must as we continue to remove the last MD-80's for an all Boeing fleet. Pilot retirements are accelerating through the end of 2007. CAL will be taking up the remainder of the "flowthrough" pilots after the last recalls, possibly as early as July 2005. Several hundred "preferential interview" pilots currently at XJT may have the opportunity to exercise their letter of employment given to them before 9/11. This is currently in negotiations with the CAL and XJT MEC's. If CAL does approch Boeing about the 7E7, has been discussed by Gordon, and more China routes become available, CAL could be the first Legacy carrier to begin hiring off the street as early as winter of 2005/Spring of 2006.

Why would 'One of the Fortune 500 Best Companies to Work For' want to do a silly thing like honor the conditional offers of employment to those who passed the interview and hiring process as a result of an agreed upon settlement to the Flowthrough? Well never mind let's negotiate it some more. The international expansion is very aggressive. Hope it works in these tough times, but second tier cities like EDI seem to have been successful to this point.
