New captain .... advice?

Your tone reminds me of the Ual DC-8 captain who crashed because his FO and SO were too intimidated to assert that "HIS AIRCRAFT" was running out of fuel.

That's so true. One rule I learned as a Riddle instructor. But I agree with flint4xx's comments wholeheartedly.

I realize that it's difficult to convey a tone in the two brief posts I've made on this thread. If you'll take a few minutes to click on the link enigma posted up there, you'll get a better picture of my attitudes about Captain's authority and how a crew should work.

In short:

A crew is not a monarchy where the Captain is King, and everyone else should bow down in his presence and utter nothing but praise and adoration - - he who says NO shalt be killed.

Nor is the crew a democracy where each person gets an equal vote, and the hot tub kumbaya warm fuzzies flow from heart to heart.

A crew IS a team consisting of a Captain - - the leader - - working together with the other crewmember(s) to safely operate an airplane from Point A to Point B. When events occur, each member of the team has a responsibility to contribute expertise and opinion, as conditions permit, but the final decision, and the final authority always lies with the Captain.

When it's the "F/O's leg," it's still the Captain's airplane. The responsible Captain never abrogates his responsibility.

You are the captain, don't forget that. However, don't forget that you are the captain because you are senior. It doesn't mean you are a better pilot, it doesn't mean you know more, it doesn't mean you have more hours. A good captain uses his F/O wisely.

I agree with your crew analysis 100%. Your earlier posts seemed a little off-base but maybe I just read them wrong.

I can understand how you could have gotten that impression, considering the brevity and the target of those posts. There seems to be a growing sentiment that F/O's own the airplane when it's the F/O's leg, and the Captain should keep his mouth shut. If the Captain suggests that the gear should be extended 2 miles before the F/O intended to extend the gear, they get offended. Again, refer to enigma's first post on this thread...

Simple rule of thumb, if you don't feel 100% comfortable doing something, DON'T DO IT! If you're starting to feel that little adrenaline rush surging through your veins, STOP! It's time to turn around and find a different plan. That's GOD saying, " Do you feel lucky, punk?"

Also, I usually tell my FO's that a good Captain is one who picks up the bar tab, maybe you'll get one next month.
