Cryptic Message

That was a cryptic message from the MEC, to say the least. I guess I'm out of the loop to know why it was cancelled.

Any ideas?

Glad you are feeling better!

A "Negotiations Demonstration" was to be held in Memphis tomorrow (parts-unknown), i.e., similar to picketing but not a picket.

It was to show support for the Negotiation Committee and the contract negotiations that are presently underway.

I know about the demonstration, I was planning to attend...

I was asking about the event that they cnx'd it for...

I heard that the MEC realized that tomorrow is Don Maliniak's birthday. . .

anybody have any ideas as to what this "event" is?
No, but I'm trying to imagine. My best guess is that some totally unrelated news item will steal the headlines, at least in Memphis --- and this would negate media coverage of our peaceful demonstration. Without the media coverage there is no point. Plus they are planning to try again, so it isn't "off," just delayed.

On the other hand.....is anything BIG cooking with UPS negotiations? Go IPA!

Anyone?

Bueller?

Why would they send out an email knowing it would get us all spun up? Maybe that's why they sent it? I'm curious as hell, and it better be good!

How about....

Maybe FedEx Express is taking an offer to the table for USAirways? The judge did permit other bidders to submit proposals.

The MEC just sent another email that stated [basically] that the rescheduling had nothing to do with contract negotiations and we should wait a few days to see why it was cancelled. Hmmmm.....

It's easy to get spun up wondering why, but I think we need to approach this just like everything else until we have a signed contract...calm, zen, wait for the next announcement - no spooling up required. As was mentioned, probably something else that would either 1) Overshadow our media coverage or 2)Make us look bad. Who knows, maybe Fred's in the hospital.

Not Cancelled, but Postponed

Because of a significant event, which should become evident to everyone in the very near future, the MEC has elected to cancel our Negotiations Unity Demonstration for tomorrow. We will be rescheduling it for a more appropriate time in the near future.

The rescheduling of this event will take a minimum of two weeks, and the SPC will be announcing details as soon as they are firmed up. We appreciate the effort of all of those who were planning to attend, but there is no other appropriate option for the MEC.

If you know someone who was going to come to the event tomorrow, please call them and be sure that they know that it is being rescheduled. We need to make sure that all pilots get the word.

Once again, you will understand the reason for this decision within the next few days. Please, understand that this demonstration will be rescheduled for the near future, and your support will be essential. Thank you.

From the Family Awareness Phone Tree activation:

Due to significant events beyond the control of the FDX MEC, the Unity Demonstration scheduled for Wednesday, June 1 is canceled. The reason for the cancellation will become evident within the next couple of days. There will be a Hub-Turn meeting at 0030 tonight (Tuesday night/Wednesday morning) to answer questions.

From the message line Addendum:

As announced in an earlier Message Line today, the Negotiations Unity Demonstration scheduled for tomorrow has been postponed due to a significant outside event unrelated to contract negotiations. For anyone who had reserved a jumpseat to attend, we have confirmed that there will be no penalty for anyone canceling a jumpseat to Memphis outside of the normal cancellation window.

Once again, you will understand the reason for this decision within the next few days. Please, understand that this demonstration will be rescheduled for the near future, and your support will again be essential. Thank you.

Rumor mill is that Fred's daughter passed away today. She was 35 and apparently had a heart condition. If this is substantiated, may she rest in peace and my prayers are with Fred and his family...
