I just saw something on A-net about a near miss at LAX. Just wondering if there is any truth to that, or if the a-netters are getting exited over nothing!

Fly safe.

TRUE

Asiana 744 almost tried land on a 737. Missed it by 50 to 100 feet when it went around. Some one said the details were on a Airliners Net forum.
Today at LAX at around 3pm, there was almost a terrible crash involving a 744 and 2 737s.

A Southwest 737 was taxiing to rwy 24L and had managed to nearly line up on its centerline. Towards the end of the runway, another Southwest 737 was crossing 24L from 24R. As these normal operations are going on, an Asiana 744 is coming down on finals to 24L at a very high rate of speed. For some reason, the Asiana 744 didn't see what was going on and continued its landing. When the pilot saw that he was about to hit the Southwest 737 that was lined up on 24L, he aborted the landing, throttled up to full power and retracted the gear. The Asiana 744s gears came within 50 feet of the tail of the Southwest 737. For some reason, the 744 was on an extremely shallow approach and was also going very fast. Many of the people on the ground were staring at this event and backing up, in fear of the 3 planes crashing into eachother. The Asiana 744 successfully aborted its landing, and did a steep climb out over the Pacific.

It was very scary to see a 744 come SO close to hitting another plane. The gears truly almost hit the 737s tail, and would have if the 744 captain hadn't pulled out. The consensus on the ground was that it was not Southwest's fault in the least, but rather the Asiana 744 was landing on the wrong runway. Scary situation, so I thought I'd pass it along.

Right. A plane spotters forum. Airliners.net...the most reliable source of accurate information on the internet. Those "plane spotters" know absolutely nothing when it comes to what really goes on. Airline passengers that think they know everything there is to know about the technical aspects of flying. The "scary situation" and "50-100 foot" accounts should be taken with the most skeptical grain of salt available....

I mean, just read the account. ..."an Asiana 744 is coming down on finals to 24L at a very high rate of speed. For some reason, the Asiana 744 didn't see what was going on and continued its landing". That should tell you all you need to know about their "expertise". Airliners.net is one of the more laughable forums around. What a joke. And a 10000+ hour "Captain" lending credibility to this "account" is just as laughable.

99.999% of the stuff posted on airliners.net is a load of sh!t. They are just a bunch of wannabe kiddies who think they know it all. Unless this near miss can be verified from a credible source, it probably happened to one of the wannabes while playing flight simulator.....

This story was told to me yesterday by a SWA FO who saw it happen. Asiana WAS within 50 to 100 feet from the 737 when it went around.

See my other response. One of our pilots saw it happen. Asiana tried to land on 24L instead of 24R. The 737 was on to hold waiting for traffic crossing downfield.

If its a real story then wheres a link to a media source who covered it. Something like that would have made a newspaper or the 10pm news.

TR4A, should I assume you frequent airliners.net?

What planet are you from? Did anybody die? No. That is why it is not on the news.

No I do not frequent or look at airliners.net

This information was verified by a FO who saw it happen.

Even if it did happen, Who Cares? That's life in the big city. A Few years ago a Delta 75 Landed over my 73 when I was in position at 9L in FLL. So What. No harm no Foul. Sh*t happens.

Yeah, and I had a 737 land over the top of us in SAN on 27 not long after a 737 #$^#$ CRUSHED one of our Metro's. killing everyone. Sh*t happens. Fu*k you, tool.

No visuals=no TV news story.

No deaths, lawsuits or alleged "right-wing conspiracy"=no newspaper story.

Perfect analogy

The way I understand it, the latter is for determining the former, no?
LAX ATC has admitted responsibility for the error which took place during a shift change.

I'd be interested to read about that. Any links to a source?
Our Union says that it is an active NTSB Investigation. It may show up at the NTSB web site some day.
