"The animation shows a near collision between Southwest Airlines Flight 440, a Boeing 737, in position for takeoff on runway 24L, and Asiana Airlines Flight 204, a Boeing 747, preparing to land. Asiana 204 aborts landing procedures and overflies Southwest 440.


The animation includes audio, and was developed from flight recorder and Air Traffic Control (ATC) radar and communication recordings. The position time history of the Boeing 737 was derived from flight recorder information, while the position time history of the Boeing 747 was derived from ATC radar data. The recorded data were time synchronized and the position time histories correlated to a high-resolution image of the Los Angeles Airport and surrounding area."

I saw the tape on NBC.. The 747 was real low on the approach. At least a full dot low or more. The animation seems to show it full scale. Although the tower was at fault, if Asiana had smoked the WN 737 the NTSB would say the Asiana's low approach was a "contributing factor" even if it was the towers fault.

I've also been vectored behind Korean 747's in LAX and I must say that's a real hassle.

I'm not passing any judgement, just making observations. I seem to remember a low approach over Honolulu 2 yrs ago by a China 747. It woke up the entire town and reports came in of the aircraft being "lower than the high rises". Turned out the plane was higher than the high rises / about 1300 ft AGL, but still well inside of the Ala Wai on "approach" to 26L.
