For the first time in my career at ASA, I've found myself looking at all the lifers and thinking to myself "you have no clue what is coming". Many of them are here because they can't move on financially, or they don't want to give up their QOL. In the end, they will end up losing both- this place appears to be getting weaker and weaker, and the prospects are dark. If something drastic isn't done to stem the tide, we are history. Regardless of longevity, seniority, or position, we're all headed for the house of pain.

i agree with everything above... problem is where and what to do? Do you realize a senior 88 or 757 capt make $150k ( unless they work themselves to death and are never home).. and a 10 yr FO makes $100k. and that comes with the pleasure of commuting to MSP or DTW or jfk and spending the next 10 years working holidays and weekends...

call me a lifer, but that just aint worth it. I can stay here in the ATL.. have a side job and be home...flame away

Your numbers are a bit off. A 757 Capt. at CAL makes much more than $150,000. More like $168,000 without even trying. That's just flying the guarantee. DAL, and AA are even better.

Almost every legacy airline FO breaks $100,000 in year 5 or less, so 10 years in another exaggeration. I know FO's at CAL that are holding weekends at holidays off around the 5-6 year seniority range so it depends on what stage of the hiring wave you got hired.

Not all of us commute, and the schedules at the legacy airlines blows away a regional airline schedule. Most pilots I know have another gig, or source of income on the side.

Your arguments don't really hold water, but if it helps you cope with your decision to make a career at the regional level, then go with that.

What happens if Delta moves your flying to another DCI? Not saying it is going to happen. You never know in this business.

There has been tremendous stagnation since 9-11, starting with furloughs (I was one), then airline BK's, and then age 65 for retirement. Those are the reasons you are jaded. But, now the retirements will start coming back (5 years later), airlines are more profitable (thanks to things like bag fees), and new fatigue rules combined with hiring standards will start turning things around. RJ's have lost their luster due to higher gas and more expensive labor than normal (more pilots staying due to hiring stagnation--more longevity). Those new fatigue rules will hurt airlines with multiple landings per day, and shorter layovers (like continuous duty overnights).

So what does that all mean? Don't miss the next train out of town when big time hiring returns, or you will continue to watch your sector shrink, and your lifer status become more irrelevant. Don't miss it!

I would not count on express or asa keeping any of their ual flying long term. Smisek isnt like tilton he actually cares about performance...

bwahahahahahaha He doesn't care about performance. He cares about the bottom line! Are you new to Smisek?
