Frontier Receives Tentative DOT Authority to Serve Los Cabos from Los Angeles and Asks DOT for Authority to Serve Two New Routes and One New Destination in Mexico
Thursday June 22, 12:26 pm ET
Frontier Seeks to Serve Its First Non-Resort Mexican Market With New Service Between Denver and Guadalajara; New LA to Cabo Service Bolsters Upcoming Launch of Los Angeles to San Francisco Route

DENVER, June 22 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Frontier Airlines (Nasdaq: FRNT - News) has received tentative approval from the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) for authorization to expand its Mexico service by offering daily non-stop service to Cabo San Lucas (SJD) from Los Angeles (LAX). The details of the service will be announced shortly for a start this Fall. In addition, Frontier also filed today with the DOT for authorization to fly non-stop from its Denver (DEN) hub to Guadalajara, Mexico (GDL) four times per week; to fly seasonally from San Diego (SAN) to Cancun, Mexico (CUN) once a week; and to fly seasonally from Kansas City (MCI) to Cabo San Lucas once a week. If awarded the routes, all new service would begin in December 2006.
Los Angeles to Cabo San Lucas

The DOT's tentative approval of Frontier's new service between Los Angeles and Cabo San Lucas comes just days before Frontier will launch its much anticipated new Los Angeles (LAX) to San Francisco (SFO) service, which is scheduled to being June 29, 2006 with five daily flights. The new service to Cabo San Lucas will provide Los Angeles travelers with a choice of three Frontier destinations including Denver and San Francisco. The flights will be aboard Frontier's new Airbus 319 aircraft, offering the most comfortable and affordable way to fly to Mexico with free 24 channels of free DIRECTV programming, a choice of three first-run movies and 33 inches of leg room.

Los Angeles will become the sixth non-Denver market to offer Frontier's Mexico service, and it represents Frontier's 14th route into Mexico. In addition, Frontier is the only low cost carrier (LCC) to serve Mexico from Los Angeles, providing a new opportunity for travelers from Southern California to find an affordable vacation at one of the world's most desirable resort destinations.

"This tentative award was one of the most competitive in recent history, and our heartfelt thanks goes out to the DOT for taking the time to make the right decision for Los Angeles, Cabo and of course, Frontier," said John Happ, Frontier's Senior Vice President of Marketing and Planning. "We are confident this market will be an unqualified success for Frontier because Los Angeles is a market that knows the Frontier product and understand the value we provide with excellent service and great low fares they can now take advantage of to bring them to one of the finest resort destinations in the world."

Denver to Guadalajara/San Diego to Cancun/Kansas City to Cabo

If approved by the DOT and Mexican governments, Guadalajara would represent Frontier's eighth Mexican destination and its first Mexican destination that it expects will carry an equal mix of business, personal and leisure travelers bi-directionally. To date, Frontier has served primarily leisure oriented beach destinations, but Guadalajara, considered Mexico's "pearl of the west" is Mexico's second largest city with a population of over three million, and it is a hub for business in Mexico. However, it is also an ideal vacation destination with its multitude of monuments, parks and flowers, fountains and tree lined avenues. In addition, Guadalajara's rich colonial history, which dates to the 16th century, is evident throughout the city.

The additional service for which Frontier is seeking approval, San Diego to Cancun and Kansas City to Cabo San Lucas, would respectively represent Frontier's seventh non-Denver Cancun route and its third Mexican destination from Kansas City, complementing existing service to Puerto Vallarta and Cancun. If granted approval for all three new routes, Frontier would boast 17 routes to Mexico, making it the largest low cost carrier (LCC) in Mexico.

"While we know it is never an easy approval process, we are hopeful the DOT will recognize and reward us for the low fare, high-value service we have brought to the other Mexico markets we serve," said Happ. "While it is a departure from the resort destinations that have proven so successful for Frontier, Guadalajara represents an entirely different opportunity as we diversify our presence in Mexico beyond our outstanding reputation as a leisure carrier to Mexico."

Acapulco and Cozumel Service to Resume from Denver

For those who can't get enough of Frontier's service to Mexico, the Airline will also reinstate its Denver to Acapulco (ACA) flights beginning December 20, 2006, with an improved twice-weekly schedule of Wednesday and Saturday service. Additionally, in response to strong customer demand, Frontier will triple its service between Denver and Cozumel (CZM). The enhanced winter schedule for this year-round service will start in November, one month earlier than the original December start date. Both Acapulco and Cozumel were new destinations for Frontier last year and are expected to be two of Frontier's top destinations during the peak seasons this year.

Happ concluded, "Today's news represents significant growth in Mexico for Frontier, and we are ready to take our place as one of the leading carriers to Mexico, LCC or otherwise. These moves are a clear message to our customers that the beaches, as well as the business centers of Mexico are now affordable and accessible. We look forward to offering unparalleled service to all of our customers across the US and we are eager to introduce our product to an entirely new customer base in Guadalajara."

Frontier requests nonstop Guadalajara service
By Chris Walsh, Rocky Mountain News
June 22, 2006

Frontier Airlines has applied for federal approval to become the first U.S. carrier to fly nonstop between Denver and Guadalajara, Mexico, yet another attempt by the company to diversify its service and make inroads south of the border.

The Denver-based carrier said Thursday it initially wants to offer service between the cities four times a week. No carriers currently serve the route with nonstop flights.

The move takes Frontier’s recent focus on Mexico a step further. The carrier in recent years has launched nonstop flights from Denver and other cities to a host of Mexico resort destinations, luring primarily U.S. leisure travelers.

But service to Guadalajara, Mexico’s second-largest city, likely would attract "an equal mix of business, personal and leisure travelers bi-directionally," Frontier said in a press release.

Frontier also said Thursday that it has applied for federal approval to fly nonstop between San Diego and Cancun, and between Kansas City and San Jose del Cabo.

If it receives approval from the U.S. Department of Transportation for all three of its proposals, Frontier would bolster its position as one of the largest low-cost airlines to service Mexico, bringing its total to 17 routes.
