After leaving the FBO where I worked for over 2 months now, when I pass by the local airports, I only wish I still were there. Seeing the jets landing, only gives me chills, and beckons me back to the ramps, runways, and FBO chatter I loved. The FBO has suffered though, according to the comments left on AirNav.com, because of hiring of girls that don't have a love of aviation, knowledge to help the pilots, or even how to use a **CENSORED****CENSORED****CENSORED****CENSORED** unicom radio.

After leaving because of a major schedule change (revolving night-day shift) that would not suit my lifestyle, I have decided to take a job elsewhere, in Louisville, KY. But it is not with aviation, and I am truly bummed.

I guess I am really just venting, but also wondering if any of you fellow guys/gals have any knowledge of what I can do to get back into aviation, behind the desk or other? I am quite interested in ATC, but lack the knowledge of how and where to begin exploring the possiblities of pursuing a career in that field. Any advice on that?

All I do know, is when I pass by Bowman Field, or fly over Staniford on my way into Bowman, my heart is truly on the field...

CHEERS:rolleyes:

You have to punch out of that life of yours and immerse yourself in aviation. In my "prior life," my work schedule and salary were not conducive to flying, so I quit. It's the best thing I've ever done for myself. Don't let life take you for a ride. You are at the wheel. Make it happen, and don't let anything stand in your way.

Ravengirl is around here somewhere. She's pursuing ATC. Why don't you zap her a PM to get some info. She has been very accomodating and helpful to others around here. There is also a long-time ATCer that posts here, but I can't remember his handle.

If you want to fly, well there are a couple of knowledgable folks around here in that arena.

what about trying to find a job at another fbo or at another (hopefully nearby) airport. or become a rampy or some other aircraft service related job...

btw, i hope this avatar doesn't cause you any physical discomfort like my last one lol ;)

maybe get a good paying job, then take lessons on the side. Flying will then be no pressure, you will have FUN, and you will still have a real job which will pay your bills.

many people enjoy flying even MORE when its not thier life!

just an idea!

If I remember correctly, I think there is a major air freight company (UPS?) who's hub is located at SDF. They have other aviation related jobs besides heaving packages.
North across the river about 10 miles there is Clark County (JVY). Home of Aircraft Specialist and Hap's two good FBO's.
If you've got a Hoosier shirt be sure to wear it as a reminder to those Cat fans they're not the only game around.
Louisville is a nice town, almost as good as Indy.

Hey Lear!

by the way, thanks for the glowing recommendation, FL000 :)

Start here!

That's the FAA's page for air traffic control careers.

You can also read this thread, which is a discussion that started here on the board a few weeks ago.

I'd be glad to answer any questions you might have here or in PM's. Feel free to get in touch!

Well, what do you know? His handle is...ATCER.

RG, no sweat. I was due to say something nice about someone.

if you really want to stay in the bi'ness, think about getting your dispatch license-there are several places that offer distance learning then about a week or two of classroom training to get the license-pay isnt spectacular starting out, but more than your average counter cutie (excuse the phrase) at an fbo gets, but there's room for growth. that way, you're not out alot of money or time, but you've got a ticket you can do more than one thing with. try

http://www.agschools.com

they've got an office in cincinnati and memphis. i dont know about the cost, mine was paid for.

Lear,

Get a job as an FA with ACA up in CVG. You'll be able to fly some of the empty legs (ahem, i mean watch the pilots fly the empty legs while the door is open) and perhaps you can hook up with a CA or FO that is also a CFI who will give you free instruction over at Lunken.

So... you wanna work in ATC ... ??? I don't blame ya... the $$$, benefits, and job security and great... not mention it's a fun job.

Folow the links that ravengirl posted... they are a great place to start and will answer your most basic of questions.

After that if you have any other questions post ehm up on the board and we'll try and answer them.

Good Luck to you.

A dispatch license could work, and you get to ride jumpseat (in fact, youre required to do so.)

I dispatch at FWA, if youre interested, send me a PM...

Just do it

Why don't you just become a professional pilot? Unless you cannot, that's what I'd do if I were you.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

Lear,

I sympathize with you!!! I also left my job as a CSR at an FBO for a non-aviation job (just last week).....but I left because a teaching job came my way and I couldn't refuse, since that's what I've been working towards. Everytime I pass the airport, my heart aches a little. It was great fun and I'll miss it a lot, especially all of the great flight crews and frequent customers.

I don't know what's out in your part of the country, but I suggest looking at job opportunities at other FBOs there, not just as a CSR, but maybe something in marketing or something like that. Check out administration jobs at both big and small airports--they like hiring people involved in aviation to do things like public relations, airport planning, etc.

Good luck and keep flying!

CG (oops, I'm "teacher" now!)
