What does it take for someone who was Airframe certified in the military to get the civilian equivalent? Is it simply a sign off by the FSDO? How about getting the Powerplant portion? Thanks in advance.

Please refer to FAR 65:

http://ecfr.gpoaccess.gov/cgi/t/tex...gn=div6&view=text&node=14:2.0.1.1.4.4&idno=14

You will still have to take a written and an oral and practical exam, if your experience in the military is acceptable as the experience required for the rating.

For powerplant, you will either have to attend and pass a certificated school or work as an apprentice for 18 months. The take and pass the tests and exams.

A friend just took his 623's to the FSDO, got some signoffs and went down to Bakers school and did a two week crash course.

Scroll down to page 16...it has a list of military services and their MOS/AFSC and what you can get a signoff for.

Not to hijack but does anyone know if there is a statute of limitation. I used to be a crew cheif but now I break them. I haven't crewed a jet in three years, what is the likelihood that I can still get a singoff? I still have my 623s.

I don't think that there is a statute of limitations. Once you qualify, you're qual'ed, no currency for an original cert. There is currency after the cert is awarded though. Thats spelled out in FAR 65.

Call around to more than one FSDO. Each one will give you a difference answer.

When I went down this path, one FSDO wanted to see a 623. Another wanted a letter from a maintenance officer certifying I had done all the required tasks. Finally, I found an ex-Air Force FSDO who asked what my former AFSC was (43171) and he told me to bring him an AF Form 2097 (award of AFSC) and he'd give me all three sign offs.
While I was at his office, he stated 623s aren't valid (filled out in pencil) just as the maintenance officer letter is bogus as well. You need to show PROOF of award of the required AFSC in some sort of official documentation. Not sure what the Air Force uses now as the 2097 went away with McPeak's reign of terror.
After you get the permission to test slips, you need to take the writtens and an Oral & Practical like everyone else.
Good luck.
