I can't believe there is actually a message board devoted to talking about flying MS Flight Sim. WTFO?

What's worse is that there is a link to this forum on that one, then you get back here and click this link and it's back to there. It's like a picture where somewhere in the picture is holding a picture of the picture, therefore within that picture there they are holding the same picture and so on....

I haven't had a beer in several months.

NDB?...You got No Damm Biddness landing at that NDB!

"Wow, that is one pompus bunch of ego-trippers on that site. Look at comments like "I can't believe there is actually a message board devoted to talking about flying MS Flight Sim. WTFO?". Apparently if you're not a 'real pilot', because you can't affort it or for other reasons, then any interest you have in aviation is childish and pathetic."

Your interest in aviation is a good thing but your obsession with a video game is lame. If you had taken all the cash you've spent on the computer, rudder pedals, control yoke and software and had spent it on flying lessons instead you would be halfway to your PPL. Get outside, go to the airport, wash a few planes, beg for a ride, and actually experience aviation. Playing a video game and claiming an interest in aviation is like blowing your buddy and claiming to have an interest in women.

The edit was removing Jigga's name. I incorrectly addressed it to him.

having 1060 posts at flightinfo.com is just as good...

in part it was flight simulator that made me interested in commercial aviation... call me a freak

i dont know...i'm still trying to figure this out, they fly VA's and you guys Fly RA's (real airlines) so who wants to be like who here?:D the cool thing about flight sim is the simple fact that i can go to the MAKE BELIEVE world and do the stuff i can't do in real life...example, bust a TFR and crash into the white house...now that might be a bit extreme of an example, but i think it illustrates what i'm getting at, that yes it's fun, and no it's not REAL...

I agree to an extent but the same goes for some of people on this forum. I peruse once in a while and I can't believe the number of posts some people have on here!

Personally, I'm bored after spending 10 minutes on the computer...unless it's a good porn..errr..I mean US History site...;)

Guys,

We do this flying stuff day in and day out, it is a job.

But stop and think for a minute, in order to pursue this, one has to be kind of nuts and have a dream, I think, that perhaps more than a few of us, have wanted this flying gig since we were kids. I know I did and am now living the dream, or perhaps the nigtmare depending on how you look at it:)

I always enjoy the young kids, with their dads in tow, sticking their head up front. Their eyes light up seeing all those buttons, lights, switches and screens.

Well, that kid is me 30 years ago and yes, I had my dad in tow. I remember it, as if it was yesterday. The bright sun coming through the windows of the DC-8, the "thousands" of gauges and the three kind gentlemen, who indulged a little kid with seemingly no hurry. It planted a seed.

It is really weird that people play on flight sims or go hang out at the airport perimeter taking pictures? To some of us, perhaps, we are after all the "cool skygods", but I remember doing the airport gig. Hanging out on the hill overlooking the airport, watching airliners arrive from all over the world.Wishing that some day that would be me.

Heck, every time the Concorde departed Kennedy, even the most blasee person would stop and gaze upon it. Watching the last BA departure, people were lined up along the runway, the same people who saw that darn thing day in and day out. Yet, they wanted to be there! Why? Aviation is fascinating! Man has wanted to fly since time immortal and we are actually the ones doing it.

So, next time you think it is silly, or dumb or stupid, just remember, that those you ridicule are not so different from yourself, the difference being you are the one actually living the dream.

So next time you sail over the Greenland in that G4 in clear blue skies, next time you fly a perfect ILS in crappy wx, in a clapped out 402 freighter, next time you do some patterns in early morning calm air, in that C-152, see if underneath all that jaded exterior, isn't a "little kid" grinning from ear to ear!

Great post Dizel. I know flight sims held me over for years until I decided to take the next step. Now who is the chick in your avatar?

Dave

Yea, what he said...

Dizel,

I agree, excellent post! I still look up when I see a jet fly overhead, doesn't matter what kind. There's still that grinning kid who gets to do exactly what he wanted to do when he was growing up, and flight sims helped fuel that need until I could do it for real.

The only reason I don't do flight sims like I used to is that they've gotten too complicated... I have to work harder to learn a sim than doing my job! Okay, that and the fact that I don't have a screaming desktop to get the most use out if it...

So for my fellow flyers out there who might look down on those who just sim, remember that not a whole lot of people get to do what we sometimes take for granted. And for those who worry about the sanity of those who post in the sim boards, you might want to look at this board! Now we are some freaks! (Me included...:P)

PS Anyone want to buy an old FLCS/TQS/RCS setup? I even have the interface card and software...:)

I am going to try landing at an NDB this week. There is one just off D73 that doesn't have too many trees around it. It may be rough, but someone who lives near there will be **CENSORED****CENSORED****CENSORED****CENSORED** impressed, and all the MS Flight Simmers will have a hero...

Realism?

Just a little note from a simmer/ PPL.

I'm with Dizel on this one!! My whole fascination with flying began with MS Flight Simulator. I still use it to this day to practice approachs and keep up my scan. Yes, there are people who take it a bit too far, but look at how much time people spend on this board ALONE (I am guilty as well)...
