Why would they be anxious to start negotiations???

There are many reasons MGMT may want to open negotiations early. Our last contract was opened only halfway through the term of the contract that was in effect. NW wanted a long term deal before they placed the CRJs with 9E. XJ did the same thing with concessions and an extention of their current deal to secure the Avro's.

They may want to lock in at the current, post-concessionary, industry average rates or possibly lock in a new deal prior to a public offering of stock. The stock market hates pending labor uncertainty. There are many other reasons that it may be advantageus to secure a new deal early aswell.
