Mesaba just put a grinding halt on hiring Saab street captains (The website showed that they needed 50 ASAP as of a few days ago). I've got to think this is due to the strong possibility of a merger.

Witness the following regarding my application submitted 2 weeks ago....

If anything, Mesaba being a turboprop and 900 operator should put them in a position of strength compared to most other companies in a merger situation.

If your guys 900s are going to new hires, then there is no need for street captains on any plane. Think about it...

900 FO spots are going to new hires...but I dont see your point.
It's an issue with seat locks. Every Airline that takes on new equipment while implementing seat locks has had the new equipment go junior. However, the company does not know how many captains will transition to the new airplane. So they over fill the captains slots on the old planes to the number they think is appropriate. In other words with the 900 upgrade going to new hires, there are no more pilots leaving the saab. Thus no more need for saab upgrades...no more street captains....This is why chances of getting 787 at NWA are better than 330 even though the 330 is junior.

To start, the removal of the posting is just because there are enough in the pool for now. With my class and two others the total street captain count is 28 plus the pool that is pretty large. The last I was told (about 2 weeks ago) is that the intention was for 100 total street captains-I don't know if that is still the target.

As for the 900, it is not going to new hires. The posts a while back were before revisions in the award came out, the plane isn't going that junior. One issue with it is the schedules are pretty crappy. There are a number of guys here who could hold it but have fantastic schedules in the saab and don't really see any reason to take the 900 slot until they have more seniority.

As to the merger talks...who knows.

You clearly dont understand the meaning of "new hire" in the context of Mesaba Airlines. It takes several years to lose that title.

I love the arrogance of some folks.

LOL, I've been continually amazed at the number of people around here that have been around so long-it's a real testament to the job.

And yeah, thanks Limey, that's what I meant about the new hires...they aren't new hire captains.

I forgot to add..

//end sarcasm

Sorry I offended you guys.

ps, thanks Boiler

Street Capts.

I just read a Mesaba memo saying that they are releasing seatlocks to fill a coming vacancy.

The memo also said that seatlock release will start from the top down and when the vacancy is filled, anybody who wasn't awarded a CRJ of either size, the seatlock will continue.

Seatlocks will be released as needed to fill the vacancy. The vacancy is for the 200 in MSP.

Yup a 2007 newhire (not seatlocked) will still be awarded CRJ captain before a seatlocked 2000 hire date. The release of the seatlocks would only happen if there are no more people qualified and not seatlocked bidding for the upgrade.

Most of the new hires hired in 2007 still don't have Atp mins.

I think they are trying to shrink the number of msp saab captains and are allowing all to bid disregarding seat locks for this bid ie no seat looks apply for this bid. At least thats how it reads to me. Why else would they make a note that all captains check there pref bids.

Reread the notice. It says they will release seat locks on an "as needed" basis. Seat locks will not be released if enough unlocked qualified pilots bid the slots.

Vacancy Notice 08-01
Per Section 24.C.1. of the CBA, Mesaba plans to waive as many Saab Captain Freezes as needed to fill the CRJ Captain positions on this Vacancy 08-01. Any Saab Captain who is currently on a freeze, who has a CRJ captain preference on file will be eligible to be awarded a CRJ Captain Position in seniority order. Saab Captains who are not awarded a CRJ Captain Position on this Vacancy Award will continue with their Saab Captain Freeze. Saab Captains should ensure that their bid cards accurately reflect their choices.

I think this is the companys way off avoiding 07' new hires from getting a golden child CRJ captain slot, the company would rather have more "XJ" experienced pilots into the left seat of the CRJ, no offense to anybody with this opinion. Does anybody have any predictions if vacancy 08-01 will go senior or junior? Just wondering since many senior folks have to consider the 12mo. flow through seat lock.

WMUSIGPI summed it up correctly.

What are the company's flight time requirements for the CRJ? Are they the same as for the SAAB? you know, ATP MINS?
