This may be elementary to some, but you do know that when you delete somehting from your computer, it's technically not deleted, but reallocated for storage. So what you may think is deleted, really isn't. In the past, when I've had to throw my cpu away, I've removed the HD and soaked it in water overnight, taking it out in the morning to rust. There are a lot of scavengers looking for your identity and such.

That's true. But I do know we have a lot of second hand scavengers in the city, so I don't mind letting them take what they may need. Just not my identity. I've seen sofas, coffee tables, lamps and other home furnishings being dragged from the curb and into someones apartment. I actually have had friends who've taken in mattresses (sick -- I know, with the potential for bed bugs) and coffee tables among other things. Sometimes they just fix up old thingamajigs too.

Just low level format your HD (think zero fill) and it will take care of it. Else, just rub it with a high power magnet. Ripping the thing out to soak in water just to rust is a waste of time and there is a chance some data is still preserved.

Even after being written over several times, the residual magnetic fields (ghost image) on the HDD can be recovered, especially by law enforcement.

The only sure bet is to physically destroy the actual disc (take the case apart to get to it, don't just beat up the case). Water will not hurt the disc, it can be removed and installed in a new drive mechanism.

Shredder software will probably protect you from anyone but the FBI/CIA. It performs multiple overwrites using random bits to minimize the ghost image. Should keep you safe from identity thieves.

There is software called Safety Shield. It is bullet proof, used by NSA etc. You load documents into a hopper and the scrubber overwrites the entire drive with bits of the docs in your hopper. It hides the face that you ever wiped the disc in the first place. Cool stuff.

Hats off to the Mesaba HR department for letting this ****************************** through the doors. As I recall, there was a psychological test to pass at the interview....

There is no psych test, but I now feel very good about being rejected by them for "not meeting their standards". If this dumbass is the epitome of their "standards", I take the rejection as a compliment.
