If I recall when the regionals were a stepping stone for the majors they were called commuters. The typical leg was ORD-FWA, or PHL-BGM. Places where a mainline a/c could'nt go into. I did a trip on the UAL side IAD-MSY-ORD. that should be mainline.
Mainline carriers are farming out flying because its cheaper and why? Among many things we make ourselves cheaper. I would rather see the majors expand, get 90 seaters on property than to have a quicker shot at upgrade.
BTW not all regionals pay bad. 2nd yr FO over 40Gs with good QOL and I commute. The fact is you may be where you are for a while. Getting 1000PIC turbine in a dash sounds great (10 years ago), But there are guys with thousands of hours PIC Turbo Jet/Glass/FMS/yadda yadda yadda still flying around at the regional level.
