And as the gas prices keep climbing, pilot salaries will keeping getting chipped away at. Unless airline management can raise ticket prices to compensate for gas increases, labor is going to take the brunt of all this. If the average citizen has to now pay $2.25/gal instead of $1.25/gal, shouldn't they also now pay $450 round trip instead of $350 round trip? Makes me almost wish we were flying like it was in the 1970's, before deregulation. I remember flying coast-coast in late 1980's for $350 round trip. Nowadays, the consumer thinks that is expensive!

.

But if USAirways goes under, watch how many 737-rated pilots will be available to fly the airplanes. Desparation causes people to do crazy things.... I hope it doesn't happen.

Well, not exactly. I could be wrong but I think the Mesa pilot group got a less than stellar contract in exchange for an "iron clad" scope clause. This was after the Freedom fiasco. So sure, those US Air guys could do that: after they start from the bottom swinging the gear on a 1900 for a while. Mesa guys care to eloborate on scope issues and the 737?

the view of the mesa pilots (at least the ones i have talked to) is that this offer is a joke. there will have to be significant improvements to the current contract and to the proposed 737 rates (they didn't offer rates but just overrides for the 737's).

Word from the training center (direct from an instructor / take it FWIW) is that the program has been shelved. So, who knows.
