random points from reading stuff in the local paper in the last month or two....
-The FAA is still 'thinking' about fining the mayor for using federal airport improvement funds for the middle of the night un-announced shut down of the airport. Some random numbers thrown out on the fine: $1 million to $4million. I believe they used a million or two to tear it up and haul it away, but i could be wrong and the number is really $800,000.
-Da mayor of chicago just signed a 5 year contract with Clear Channel communications to give them the rights to lease the land on Northerly Island and use it for summer time outdoor concerts (I am not kidding). The city would get about $800,000 for this contract and it doesn't even come CLOSE to helping out an already broke city develop funds to turn the 'island' into a park like it wants to. Critics of da mayor say that he chose this route to jumpstart the 'use' of the space by the little people (ie, ordinary citizens, not fat-cat airplane pilots and politicians).
-The 'Friends of Meigs' organization has an excellent suggestion: that the city get back on the aiport bandwagon. The 'friends' have proposed: apply for and use available federal airport money to build another runway (and thus ease airport congestion that da mayor is whining about). The 'friends' proposal suggests that if da mayor approves of using 25 acres of the space for a park and the rest for an airport, he'll get free money AND another park for the little people. Da mayor will probably never publicly admit to nor give any merit to this plan b/c the reason he tore up the airport was to prevent terrorists from launching aircraft from Meigs...and we wouldn't want to be helping the terrorists out, would we?
