Fan-belt

Today I was watching a video clip on cnn.com where they were panning a camera around the crash site. When the camera came upon the left engine and the N1 fan exposed the commentator called it a 'fan-belt'.

To the non-pilot, this looks like a pretty good example. To us pilots though, it's as hokie as two boys in a closet!

The interesting part, the individual who is setting up this "reenactment" is a former NTSB chief investigator.

I don't think this shows how irresponsible the media is by any means. Is it realistic, not very...but everyone's reaction to this is a little overblown. Have you ever been with a group of people, and there is a smaller group of people within that group that consists of pilots. Give the conversation 30 seconds and all the pilot talk will send the other folks looking for new company, or their eyes just glaze over.

A doctor has to bring explanations down to their patients level, not because their patient is stupid, but they are discussing topics that an individual is not well versed in...same situation here.
