Do commercial ships file the equivalent of an aviation flight plan with anyone? If an airplane with an open flight plan never shows up at its destination, a search commences. What about ships that don't show up?

Just wondering...

Yes they do, it's sort of like our airways. There are lot's of rules and regs in US waters, they change as you enter international waters. I remember that my father would tell me some things about it when I was younger (he was involved in grain and fertilizer trade with numerous companies located all over the world). I could ask as I'm sure he knows a great deal about it. Some of the container ships he had a hand in were freaking huge, especially for a little kid.

Maritime Ops

Typhoon,

No, there not a "Sail Plan" filed with a governmental authority like the USCG. Ships are monitored by their operators and do have to file arrival notices for landings in U.S. ports. Smaller craft sometimes file "Sail Plans" with commercial monitoring operations like Vessel Assist, Tow Boat U.S. and the like If the small craft does not dial up the commerical monitor and advise them that they arrived at their destination the commercial monitor commences the search.

There's quite a bit of interesting stuff in the maritime world. PM me with any questions since that stuff is not really appropriate content for this board. I'd be glad to fill you in.
