I do agree that a lot of pilots jump at the first sign of turbulence, however, United did have a passenger killed in turbulence a few years ago. This might explain their concern for your safety.

The airlines provide a service. A smooth ride is part of providing the customer with a pleasant ride.

That being said, I have heard the occasional guy with a little too much attitude whining incessantly to a controller looking for smooth air. It is rare, though.

The majority of the time, a rough ride can be cancelled out by a smooth landing. This is where the airlines are letting the service slip a bit : - )

Get on the FAA website and see how many flight attendants get hurt in turbulence- broken ankles, concussions. I'd be worried, too. Mix into that our sue-happy society.... seat belt sign on.

If you were hired at United in the 80's with "no time" you now have 20 plus years of jet time. Be at max altitude for your given weight and run across moderate chop or mountain wave. Let us know how it turns out.

Gup

Jeez, you're the child/fo:laugh: walking through the terminal with the iPod, backpack, black tennis shoes, and frosted tips, aren't you?
Did you ever wonder HOW they lived long enough to BECOME "Old Dudes"?
Buffet bounderies are something you don't have worry about in your turboprop.
Maybe some of these "Old Dudes" learned a few things in the last 25-35 years that YOU should try to learn before you get in a jet.
If you're in a jet now, your education is lacking: I hope I'm not along when your ignorance becomes apparent in a more tangible manner.

Wait! This MUST be flame-bait, right? At least, I hope so...

This has to be flaim bait or Jeff Spiccoli from Fast Times is back. DUUUUde, Please let us know who you work for so I never send my family on that carrier.

I knew a flight attendant that got her collarbone broken in turbulence in a turboprop.....

Hey TrerrainModerate chop 'aint that big a deal at 180 in your turbo prop. It's a big deal at 410 in a swept-wing jet! But you already know that.

This thread shows the lack of experience on the part of the original author.

Great post Gup ---- "Be at max altitude for your given weight and run across moderate chop or mountain wave. Let us know how it turns out."

According to his previous posts Terrain is a Skywest pilot now, used to be Piedmont.

According to the post that started this thread...he has A LOT to learn about flying sweptwing airplanes!

"410 it Dude!!!!"...............sounds like nobody lernt nothin......

Smooth landings are for sissies. She's gonna get put down in the first third no matter what... soft, hard, whatever. Not even a waveoff call will prevent me from putting her where she belongs. Which brings up another subject... CRM is for sissies as well. When I taxi clear I scream aloud "Take that Mr. Runway... who's the man now?!?!"

Max alt. for weight on an underpowered L10 as a FE. Severe mountain wave. Couldn't hold altitude. Finally stopped at 260. Better F'in believe I pay attention over ALS when that speed tape starts moving. TC

P.S.--It's not your money. Why do you care if I go 25 miles outta my way to avoid flying through an anvil or descend 5,000' to get out of chop?

Injuries concerning FA's are the main reason we look for smooth air. Keepng Joe Customer happy is right up there also. Statistics show that more FA injuries happen when an aircraft hits rough air at airspeeds of 300KIAS and higher. Why anyone goes that fast in rough air is a good question to ask the perpetrator.

Timmy Dude I can hand fly this 1900 through level 3 and 4 better than any OOHH uugh ummhu CRAP!!! I just crackeed the display on my ipod.. Hey hand me my backpack and tell atc we need an immediate 180 for weather. How long is that Cat D mel valid on the Narco Radar thingy.

Thor: I dont know the other captains told me they just turn the adf on and when there is lightning it points to the discharge. They said it is easier then the radar or stormscope to use.

Timmy: Ya radars and stormscopes suck

Timmy:Hey thor how much does it cost for you to get 250 hrs in the right seat of this thing?

Thor: My dad only had to pay $24,000 plus housing. I only have a 3.000 per month allowance while i am still in the states. This flying job sucks. But I have a guaranteed right seat slot in the 747 when i go back to Norway because my dad is a foreign diplomat and a board member on the national airline

Timmy: I would never want to fly that thing. Jet Pilot Academy told us that after a few years here we would be able to go to any major we send a resume to. Continental, Jb, Delta, and United all suck.. I am too good to fly a bunch of boxes at night anyways. I hear Mesa and Skywest are hiring alot and the upgrade is only 18 months. My buddy in the right seat there say they are the best pilots in the world because they all flew turbo props and get to hone their skills with 6 legs a day.

Thor: Looks like more weather ahead

Timmy: Holy crap where did that come UUUGH UNN HUUUP. I think the flight attendant just snapped off a leg.

Thor: We donts have no flight attendant.

Timmy: Will you hand me my backpack already and tell atc we need another 180 for weather.

Just review this village idiots' posts.

6 months ago he's trolling for job tidbits about crappy charter outfits. Now he's dispensing advice on handling the bigs jets.

I agree that somewhere out there a village is missing its idiot, however I gotta give the lad credit for his "Cobra Kai" avatar. That Johnny was such a d!ck to Mr. Miyagi and Danielson. I mean come on... sweeping the leg like that was totally uncalled for.

Try it at FL410 in an MD11 at 605K. Red zipper to Lo Spd Protection and back in 3 sec or less in a continuing IO pattern. At some point it is either an annoyance or a concern. A dramatic departure from turb in the Jetstream or the Saab. No comments please. Been there, done that, got the MF T-Shirt.

LOL, sounds like a night over the Pacific in a 74, low speed protection to overspeed and back again so quick it was scary!! We took off near gross and by the time of the encounter we still weighed somewhere in the neighborhood of 750k. The big old girl felt kind of like a 172 straining to slowfly at 5000 feet, mushy and just downright spooky feeling!

Bad part about it is Mr. Terrain is flying a jet and probably doesn't have a clue what we are all talking about.

One would hope that this thread has humbled Terrain. Even the other day in a 200 I couldn't accelate at FL360 in moderate chope...I asked for lower.

I hope Terrain can learn something from this: White hair doesn't mean a pilot is a *************************...quite the opposite.
