When the FAR's state thate you must.......
1) Intercept and track a navagational course
2) Perform 6 instrument approaches
3) Perform 6 holds every 6 months

My question is, why include the first one, don't you already intercept and track everytime you shoot a full or partial approach? This goes for the holds as well.

Thats a good question...

I understand the approaches thing (although I think a more thorough currency requirement would be 4 nonprecision and 2 precision approaches...but anyway) and the hold thing (make sure if you've gotta hold somewhere you remember how to do it)...

As for the navigational course thingy...I dunno...maybe they want you to track/intercept radials on airways...beats me...

6 Calender Months

Just another question- I had an IPC in March '04 and went the other day to put in some more practice approaches to remain legal (don't flame me about being current). The way I read the FARs I have until the end of September to get my approaches/intercepting/holding done, not 6 months from the actual IPC date. Correct me if I wrong-

Yup, like almost all FAR time measurements, instrument currency is measured in "Calendar months"

And, to add to minitour's response, the addition of "interception and tracking" is one of the great mysteries of the FAR.

Couldn't you satisfy the approachs with ASR (Airport Survelence Radar) approaches and yet not get the tracking requirement done?

That's good! I guess you could.

Lawfly's Reply:

There is no requirement to "perform 6 holds every 6 months".
The only requirement for holds is to have performed "holding procedures" (quantity unspecified) with the preceding 6 calendar months. The only elements to which "6" ("six") applies are: number of preceding calendar months, and number of approaches. Neither the number of holding procedures nor the number of courses tracked is specified in 61.57(c)(1)(i),(ii),(iii).
