Logging IRO Time

Just curious as to how different Intl pilots log IRO time on long haul stuff? I always thought as an IRO FO, even though I'm type rated, I just log the entire flight as SIC since I'm required crew. Any thought's/suggestions/Interp's?

Example...757 from Europe. 8.5TT I'm in Jumpseat for TO & Land, and in each seat for 2 hours apiece. Log 8.5 TT 8.5 SIC and 0 TO 0 Ldg

It's likely the flight was released with only a single PIC named on the release. If that's the case, I'd simply log it SIC. At this point in your career, it's not likely you need anymore PIC time, so why bother wtih some fancy interpetation of the regs just so you can "maybe" log some portion PIC.

you're logging the correct way

You're doing the right thing. I know under part 61 is different than part 1 when it comes to logging PIC. Just use the simple test: Did you sign the log book? Is your name on the release as the PIC. If both is yes than you can log PIC. As an type rated IRO you can legally log PIC during all times when your rear end is in the left seat as the sole manipulator but most if not all airlines will not recognize it as PIC.
I've heard of guys getting bounced out of interviews for logging PIC as an type rated IRO.

Employer's don't own your logbooks, which is a good thing since they all have slightly different criterion for flight time. The key is that you have good records and a logical(FAR based) reason for doing whatever you chose to do. I would start a separate category named 'IRO' and log the PIC portion however the applicable FAR's allow you to do it. This makes it easy to back out the time for apps in the future(easier still if you have an electronic logbook). When you fill out apps, just back the time out unless the app specifically asks for it-who knows there could be a similar style operation that values your experience in this area down the line for whatever reason. As long as your books are clear, follow the FAR's, and you haven't put time on the application that wasn't asked for by the respective company, you won't have any problems.
