Does anyone on the board live in Dubai who can give me some info on how life is there?

I'm mostly looking at cost and security. I've been offered a very lucrative systems engineering position and I'd like some info to help me make the decision

Thanks

Try to PM a guy with the handle "typhoonpilot", he has been out there for a 5-6 years now and I'm sure he can answer all your questions.

USAToday had an article on it in Destinations and Diversions a little over a week ago. Someone smarter than me can provide you with a link. The article may not be exactly what you are looking for, but may be able to provide a little background information.

I spent about a year over there in 1996. Looks like a lot has changed. I enjoyed my time and felt safer there than in most U.S. cities. There is plenty to do and many expats to hang out with. It is expensive and the weather is brutal(HOT! and HUMID!). One day the low was 100 F, need I say more.

If the right job came along, I would not hesitate to go back and bring my family along.

Dubai rocks! I was stationed just outside of Dubai for about 6 months in 2003. We went into town every chance we had. Everyone speaks English (all the signs are in English as well as Arabic). It is a very diverse city. You will see women in hip hugger jeans with their thong showing right next to women in full berkahs. Lot's of Europeans live there too. I've spent time in every country on the Persian Gulf (except Iran) and Dubai would be my first choice of cities to live in.

I concur. I had many layovers there in another life, and between golf, scuba and dancing with good-looking ladies, I had little time to sleep...

Ditto on what he said......

If you are going to "play" in the sandbox, that's the place......

Plenty of bars, shopping malls, "working women".......But you are still the infidel, but plenty of palefaces from europe around to make you feel like you are at home.

And just think, if you want to get beheaded, beaten to death with rocks, or hung in a public square because you're the white devil, you got that close by.

Say Hi to Capt. Ed and Reggie for me.
