What kind of things do I need to get for training and on the line? ie bag, cell phone, a pen, etc. Assume the only thing I bought so far is a life jacket that I am using in the pool (almost worn out).

K-Y Jelly if your going to the regionals

Oh and food stamps

A watch with lots of dials

check your brain at the door if you are going to the regionals...oh and forget about a wallet, you will not have money to put in a wallet

An iPod and a pair of Oakleys.

Yes, I have both.

And don't forget your hair gel... Lots and lots of hair gel!

Don't forget to include stickers for airplanes you have never flown on your flight bag. Very regional chic!

"Don't forget to include stickers for airplanes you have never flown on your flight bag. Very regional chic!"

LOL!!!

This was a huge personal pet-peeve. How's a furloughed guy supposed to identify other furloughed guys if EVERY Tom, Dick, and Harry has a 737 sticker on their bag???

I am proudly bringing my Echelon 120 with me, if and when PDT finally calls...It can be neatly folded into a pretzel shape, and although it sounds like crap, it has molded rather nicely in the shape of my head over the last four years I've owned it. I've never seen any other headsets that fold like that. And it was only a hundred bucks when I bought it. Best money ever spent on something in aviation!

BTW, does PDT provide headsets? Do Dashes have FMS?

Thanks,
ceo.

The dashes have headsets, but you would do well to bring your own. They are the lightweight tube-in-your ear variety.

FMS? No, not so much. The -100s have the King Naviagation System, very high tech... In 1985. It uses UHF (DME) rho-rho-rho best computed postion. It works good, except when it doesn't. Basic navigation. No real useful fuel planning functions or VNAV. The -200s and -300s have the Universal Navigation System which is GPS based and has a good fuel planning funtion and VNAV. A much better system all together but still way behind modern FMS systems.

No Respect!!

Come on guys! Help the kid out!

Well, Ill try. Things that I should have had but really didn't have to have.

1) Purdy Neat luggage that will fit in the RJ overhead. It has the longer handle and the strap for your flight bag. I went with the cheap travel pro and regretted it for several years. I looked like a homeless FO with rope holding my flight bag up.
2) A good flight bag for your pubs. The guys on here can tell you the dimensions. Mine was made of that ballistic stuff and is still in great shape. Some guys go to Office Depot and get a 22 dollar special. That maybe the ticket for a while.
3) Find out what type of headset the guys are wearing for the aircraft you will fly. I made the mistake of using the companies headsets and I got sick all the time. Got my own Telex 750s and haven't gotten sick yet (OK, maybe once or twice).
4) Buy 4 or 5 really cheap calculators for weight and balance calculations, etc.. You know, the $3-$4 kind at Walmart or your favorite store. They need to be as ugly as possible and put your name all over them. I ALWAYS forgot mine on the dash or somewhere and sometimes I got them back!
5) Get a small plastic container to put spare car keys, batteries, sunglasses or reading glasses, paper a$$holes for torn pubs, extra mini log books, pens and pencils, etc. This goes in your pubs case.
6) I bought a small white or? colored binder the same size as the Jeps charts and only put the ones I needed for the month in it. They were always available and I only needed one book instead of two or three. The rest of the charts stayed in the flight bag.
7) Buy a couple of small mini mag flashlights and keep extra batteries. I always lost those to and for some reason never got any of those back???

Good luck to you!

PDT has Plantronics POS-169 headsets in all the airplanes. The 2 and 300s have the UNS.

Bring plenty of ones for the strip club next door to the hotel.

All you'll need for class is the usual pens, paper, a pencil, notebook, calculator and a couple of highlighters.

Once you get in the sim, get a Telex 750. For SOE, you'll want the redbook to keep your times, a couple of calculators, pretty much all the stuff Tim said.

As far as flight bag, you could buy a casket from a funeral home for a kit bag and it will fit in the Dash cockpit. Anything ou can get within reason will fit.

Stay away from the company Travelpro bag. It sucks! Also, DO NOT buy the uniform shirts from Cintas. They're crappy and won't last long. Get some from an online pilot shop.

A big plastic hand so you can smack the crap out of the asshole in the next cubicle who insists on calling everyone with the speaker "on".

Yeah, bring singles for the Gentleman's Club next door. And mace if you plan on walking around the hotel past dark-thirty.

I bought a flight bag before class. I bought the 60 dollar vinyl bag from crewgear.com. It's held up really well. I also have the PNS Stealth rollaboard and it's the shizznit. It's expensive but fits in the overhead and holds lots of crap. I bought a new Sennheiser ANR headseat and I put it in a plastic tupperware container so it doesn't get banged up. I have a mini maglight that I never use, but have it just in case. I threw a couple of pens in and a highlighter because I'm an idiot and sometimes I'll mark stuff on Jepps that I would normally forget. Then I stopped buying stuff because my credit card was about to melt.

A Gatorade bottle so you can pee inflight.

i agree with all of this except the telex 750 recommendation. contrary to what some fellow PDT pilots say, the dash 8 is not quiet. you may prefer to keep your current headset and hold off on buying a new one untill you've flow in the dash a few times. some of the pdt guys take off their headsets and/or never use the intercom, and instead just shout at each other over the engines. they however will all be deaf by the time they are 40.

Buy about $100 worth of earplugs.

If you really like peeing in a bottle that's your business, but most of us use the Lav. I also highly agree to do a little flying before you go out and buy a 750 or other small headset. I wasted a bunch of cash on a 750 that I now never wear.

I am currently flying a C404, no lav, and 6+ hour legs....I actually tried this, this past week (in a gatorade bottle no less!)...I can't do it. Apparently, I can only sleep horizontally and pee vertically.

how can you fly 6 hours in a 404, do they have extended tanks?
