I was wondering about an FAA letter of warning. I have heard that they are on your record for 2 years? What is the purpose of them? Is it a huge black mark on someones record? Is it like a violation?

well, no. two years until they get expunged. make sure they actually expunge it. no employer or anyone can see it in your record. Its in case it happens again, the faa knows there may be more reprecussions to take. I wouldnt sweat it too much. just learn from it.

what are the reasons for getting a warning letter????

I got one when I was working on my CFI and about had an ulcer until I got a grasp on the situation. Basically, it's the FAA's nice way of telling you that you f#$ked up but not that bad, we are not going to violate you if we don't think you meant to do it and didn't compromise anybodys safety in the process. Don't quote me on that, but that is the jist of it. OR, for posting silly rumors on flightinfo, the FAA guy told me when I got mine, I SWEAR!

Like the guy above said, learn from it and move on. Besides, it makes for good job interview fodder when the guys asks if yu ever broke a reg, ect. If you deal with it properly, it gives you plenty of that "I screwed up and took responsibility for my actions and learned from it and am now a safer/better pilot because of it yada yada yada..."

I've used THREE times now and always got a positiove smile from the people who interviewed me and then moved on.

How long does it take to get a letter of warning or something of the like from the FAA?

It probably depends on the situation. But before I got the warning letter I got a letter in the mail 5 months after the incident, a "formal notification", telling me that I was under investigation form the FAA. Then, I got a call from the FSDO asking about details of what happend, how, why, ect. I was told I would hear back when they decided on the action they would take. I later got a call telling me the action they were going to take. I received the waring letter at 6 months after the faux pas.

I can't remember if the 2 year period was dated from when the incident occured or from the final ruling form the FSDO.

Wow Dojet, that is right at the Statute of limitations. 6 months after the incident. Any longer and stale complaint from what I have read.
