Northwest to buy Mesaba Airlines

Northwest Airlines said Friday that it has reached an agreement to acquire its regional Airlink partner Mesaba Airlines.
The offer must be approved by the bankruptcy court and Mesaba parent MAIR Holdings. Both Mesaba and Northwest have been in bankruptcy for more than a year. Mesaba operates a fleet of 46 Saab 340s as an Airlink partner.
"Northwest believes that the proposed transaction would be in the best interest of Mesaba's creditors, its employees and the many customers who depend on Mesaba," NWA said in a statement. If the deal goes through, it will be included as part of NWA's reorganization plan due Jan. 16.
"We think it's a good deal," a Northwest spokesperson told ATWOnline. "It secures our core business and positions us for growth." The spokesperson added that representatives from Mesaba and its creditors already have agreed to the plan.
The acquisition would not affect NWA's plan to establish a wholly owned regional, Compass Airlines. "We are still moving forward with Compass," the spokesperson said. NWA three months ago announced orders for 36 E-175s to be operated by Compass, along with 36 CRJ900s (ATWOnline, Oct. 6, 2005). Friday's announcement creates the possibility that Mesaba will operate the CRJs along with the Saabs.
 
I still see the 900's going elsewhere. I see Mesaba operating embs

Wrong. E-175's are already pledged to Compass, they are setting up training for them, and it's in thier initial DOT filing they are going to operate with them....

This sounds like the same article that has been posted in 3 other posts. It still hasn't been approved by Mair holdings, so it isn't official yet.
 
What choice do they have? Sell to nwa or lose more flying. The more interesting question: why is the mair letter under attack again? If nwa buys xj, the letter is useless. Saabs are sold to big sky and skw gets more crj's. xj goes poof. The shell game continues.

The MAIR letter is an agreement between the Air Line Pilots Association of Mesaba Airlines and MAIR holdings. If NWA buys Mesaba Airlines is does not neccessarily dissolve this binding agreement as ALPA at Mesaba and MAIR are both operational entities.

I would think the easiest way to get rid of the MAIR letter is to sell off Big Sky to a new holding company and liquidating MAIR after Mesaba is gone.

Yes...and they are actually not bad. Slightly above average in the 50-seat industry. Not sure how the work rules play on that though.
 
Not that their word is worth anything at all, but NWA clearly stated that when they buy Mesaba, the Saabs will be at Mesaba, and they indicated that the 36 CRJs will go there, too.

They are not trustworthy, but they made their intentions for XJ pretty clear, nonetheless. Besides, they have to pump up the value before they can flip it, and that means more than just 49 Saabs or just 36 CRJs.

It ain't gonna be a picnic, but the fleet will have to increase for the deal to be worthwhile to NWA.

Something else to consider is that if history is any guide NWA will own XJ for a number of years before the "flip." The original NWA purchase plan of PCL was for us to operate 46 CRJ's and 28 Saabs. We all see how that turned out.

I would bet that the plans for XJ's future are not even comprehendable right now and the current NWA order books reflect nothing of what XJ may look like five years from now.
