You would be just as much an idiot at age 12 as at 60. MORON.

Am I the only one who has noticed the irony of this post, where a man with some 10,000 hours and a B-52 in his profile is able to write a post worthy of a twelve year old?

How did they know how old you where off your resume?

Yep. My dad still has trouble deciding how to use where and were. And the expression "suck at" is one of his favorites.

Anybody smell something in the woodpile?

Idiot, moron and "dumas"

Everyone pretty much agrees that you are an idiot. You really think that it was age discrimination? How did they know how old you where off your resume? If you put enough information on your resume to tell them your age, then they already decided that you were an idiot. (Go back to school and figure out how to type a resume) Your age had nothing to do with it. You would be just as much an idiot at age 12 as at 60. MORON.

You just suck at marketing yourself. Figure it out! Dumas
Is "dumbass" the word you're looking for?

I thought that I read above that being older would be an asset. I heard that from more than one source back when I was applying and more recently from the posts above.

I sent resumes with and without age-revealing information. With, to market my "asset." Same results, or lack thereof, for both.

Look at it this way. You cannot hide who you are, especially in this business. Your age can be determined at a glance from your airman certificates, which you have to provide on request at your interview (Mr. Reed asked to see mine at my Mesa interview.). You will be found out, sooner or later - from an application form or other source. I was not ashamed of my age (except that now it is sort of depressing to receive AARP mail!). I saw no reason not be up front about my age.

Read my post again. I'm trying to point out that my younger peers were getting interviews and jobs off their resumes from the same places to which I sent my materials. It is called inductive reasoning.

Your assessment of my intelligence level is appreciated.

PS-To Timebuilder: I appreciated your age discrimination story about your friend "Bob" in the New York radio market. Sounds like something that happened to a long-time friend of mine in that "business."

Maybe he was talking about Alexander Dumas (1824-1895).

Perhaps he was encouraging you to construct your resume in the style of the French dramatist?

:D :D :D

Happy New Year, Bobby!

Alberto Santos-Dumas, perhaps?

Happy New Year to you, my friend. :)

"7",

Do not discount the old frieght haulers out there. I know at my old company they liked pilots that had some life experiences under their belt. (Younger people don't flame me) I bellieve the reason was that the older pilots were less likely to run off to a regional or major thus saviong the company training money. Most 135 operations are owned by a small group or family and the name of the game is to make money for themselves not stock holders. As some say in the South it's just "Bidddness". Give the check haulers a try. You will get some great experience and then you can decide if the regionals are the way for you. Good Luck. In my opinion you are never to old. Be careful, if YOU believe you are too old it will show in the interview whether for a pilot slot or any position in life. If it shows then you will be sure to get the thanks, no thanks letter.

Hey, Happy New Year.

What does Johnny have planned for the coming years as check hauling decreases due to electronic clearing?

Send me a PM if you have time.

hangar7guy,
Regarding the age issue, I'm in somewhat of a similar situation as you are so I understand your concern. Due to 911 and the economy, competitiveness in getting a pilot job is more than it's ever been. The companies that ARE hiring have the pick of the litter. I think one of the major things the interviewers look for is your flight time being commensurable with your age. So we have to sell ourselves in other areas. I personally think we should push the issue that if a regional hires us, we'll stay with them until retirement. That way, they are getting their money's worth out of us. If they hire a 22 year old punk, they may only get a few years service from him until he leaves for the majors. Like somebody said before, I'd go fly checks or something and get current again etc...then apply at the regionals..

Alternate age discrimination theory

I have another theory regarding age discrimination. The regionals don't want you to stay. They expect the 22-year-olds to leave in a few years. Therefore, they don't have to worry about them paying top of scale and vesting in their retirement plans. If you stay, they will be stuck with paying you top salary when you top out at scale. At 60 they will be responsible for paying you retirement and health benies. That costs them money. They don't want to pay out that money. You've heard the stories of companies who can long-time employees just short of retirement. That's why. In so doing these companies risk lawsuits, but it's a risk they accept because they have so many resources available to defend such suits.

I wish the best for both of you guys. I write my comments just to provide my .02 perspective on the issue.
