Wow, puddlejumper....sorry to hear that.

We stay there, and at all the other usual places up there quite a bit...I'm cutting/pasting this one and sending it to everyone I work with. Quite a few bring laptops and I know when you have to lug it around everywhere it's easy to just set it down for a second...especially getting breakfast from the buffet at a hotel!

You might want to check to see if your homeowners insurance covers this. My brother had his car broken into in LA and they took his laptop. Homeowners covered it 100% after a deductible.

hey cficare, i'm new at the insurance game and my parents are asleep, so i'll ask. i'm going to buy a laptop in the next 2 weeks. do i need to somehow let the insurance company know that i want my computer covered or is it covered under a 'blanket' homeowners policy?

If you are considering a Dell, wait till the $750 coupon comes out. You'll save a ton and get a good system in the end. I recently got a 700m after reading the thread on here and couldn't be happier.

One can get around a BIOS password, but it involves getting access to the motherboard, and that's generally more work than most thieves are willing to do - especially in the case of a laptop.

sorry to hear........

if you saw dude put his jacket on your chair, wouldnt you want to back and inquire as to why he was doing it?

Naw man, he put the jacket on the chair at their table, facing away from my table but adjacent to my table. Got it? Ok. I'll definitely be more careful in the future. Having grown up in a small town in upstate NY, I'm pretty naive when it comes to stuff like that. I'm learning though!

CFIcare: Yes, I had a specific rider for computer equipment, up to $2000 for an additional $15/year. There's no deductible and it will be replaced with like and similar equipment, replacement cost. I've provided all proof of ownership to the agent. She'll put out requests to three computer dealerships for a "like" replacement and reimburse me for the lowest cost one after we discuss/agree. It was a 2 Ghz P4 with 64M integrated video, 14" screen, 1GB RAM and a 7200 rpm 60 GB HD. I've ordered a custom ASUS setup from http://istnc.com/store/categories.php?cat=22
They seem like a good group of people and I think I'll be getting the most bang for the buck with them.

Oh, and BTW, if having chlamydia is anywhere near as bad as being tested for it (involves a swab insertion), I think that may be a suitable punishment for them... :)

Fly and overnight safely ya all!

or you can boot from a floppy and bypass the system, you'll be in dos though. Best way is to encrypt your important files

No. Without the BIOS password, you can't boot anything (that's the whole point). But as other posters mentioned, you can remove the hard drive or discharge the BIOS CMOS to reset the password if you want to do a little work.

Encrypt the stuff you want to protect.

Depends on the OS. It's built into Windows 2000 and Windows XP. Check the on-line help topic for EFS (Encrypting File System).

All great advice, the goal is the protection of your personal data.
I insure all my laptops through a specialist company, I pay $ 120 bucks a year which covers me for full replacement cost of my laptop to a value of $ 2500.
I did this for a multitude of reasons, dropping it while commuting, the TSA break it by dropping it while trying to sniff you for alcohol, the list goes on of which theft is obviously one of them.
I know it's too late now and I feel for ya Bro', once you get your replacement run a google search for specialist laptop insurance and take your pic, the one I use is linked below:

here's a thought.....

Do a quick search under Ebay and see if it shows up. I have heard of people stealing stuff to resell on Ebay. Just recently a woman fouund her house broken into and found her stuff for sale on Ebay. After some quick police work the crook was captured and she got her stuff back.

Goodluck, sorry to hear about your laptop?
