The original test ship of which you speak of, ship 1001, is now parked in Atlanta at Delta's Hanger 1, which is the original hanger used by Delta when they started flying there. The ship is currently used as a gift ship full of Delta's past. The flight deck is still intact and fully accessable.....

Wow. I'm glad to hear that. Thanks. I'd love to see 1001 again. Is it open to the public or just Delta employees?

I got my FE rating in that ship when I was only 25 - at the time, I was the youngest FE rated in the L-1011.

To my knowledge, only to Delta employees. You can, however, be escorted into the Delta fortress by an employee. Just inquire at the gate the next time you're in Atlanta. It's on the South side of Loop Road, just a block South of the Delta Credit Union, and about 1/4 mile down the road East of Flight Safety.

Hope you make it.

What airline if flying the L1011 in the US? Ive heard possibly ATA is keeping some on for charter use but what routes are they being used on?

I flew on an ATA TriStar to Hawaii out of Los Angeles several years ago. I don't know if they are still flying them on that route. I spoke to the crew and they work what they call "the Honolulu turn-around": leave LAX at 9:00am - land at Honolulu and spend 3 hours on the ground - then fly back to LAX and get in around 9:00pm. Then off for 4 days, then repeat.

ATA's L10's are being used exclusively for military charters these days (though I did hear rumor of a MCO flight over the holidays done by one of them). One on the west coast and the rest in and out of the sandbox doing R&R flights to DFW.
