My brother just landed a job fighting wildfires for the BLM out there. I'm just looking for any info that anyone may have regarding the city and surrounding area. He's going to need to find a place to live (an apt.) rather soon. Anyone have any leads? Is it a fairly safe city? Are there areas to stay away from? He's looking to fly out there (from Columbus, OH) very soon to scout around. What's the nearest/best airport to fly into from which to drive the rest of the way? I'm assuming that their airport doesn't have airline service but I may be wrong. What is their airport identifier?

Thanks for any info, I appreciate it and will pass it along. He just got the word today and he's pretty excited (I think he's nuts...but he thinks pilots are nuts for following little dials and instruments through clouds to land a plane with no visual reference...I guess it's all perspective).

Again, thanks.

Hey Illini-
Horizon runs dash 8's in there out of Portland I believe (LMT). Driving there could be a real hassle i think its about 7 hrs from the Portland or Sacramento areas.

It is a beautiful area to fly in (go check out Crater lake...unbelievable!) but I can't tell you too much about the town. It should be a busy summer for him...

I lived in Klamath Falls for nearly 7 years. I moved to San Diego from there a couple of years ago. Have your bother e-mail me, I can let him know anything he needs to know.

The he could fly commercially into Medford, OR and drive, too. It's about 2 hours drive from there. The town is an old Air Force base. It's a pit, but as safe as any other small town in Oregon. Cost of living is low, but so is the standard. Home of OIT.

Wow that many people on this board know about K-falls?? I went to OIT and learned to fly while I was there too.

It is a very depressed ex-logging town. True statement about a lot of tweakers. Klamath has far more than its fair share of weirdos. Google search the phrase "Pardon me officer while I finish my beer" -- that photo pretty much sums up the experience. Overall it is a safe area, though.

What else..
- Cost of housing is very low. I would imaging he'd have no trouble finding accomodations quickly. Heck you can buy a decent house for under 100 grand!
- People drive very slow -- tell your bro not to speed, the cops are speed-trap-happy
- Unlike what most people picture when they think Oregon, its not too wet. Maybe 20-25 inches precip a year, as they're east of the cascades. It is cold, though. There was one year when I was there where it snowed at least once every month of the year. Summers generally pleasant and not hot, though.
- During the summer the bugs will drive you nuts. I haven't been to Alaska so I probably shouldn't talk, but....
- Excellent outdoor recreation in the mountains, high desert, etc. Good hunting too.

If your bro decides flying isn't crazy and wants some flight instruction, check out Pelican Aviation. Reasonable rates & great/safe outfit. I worked part-time for the owner for a few years and he runs a great operation.

You brother is gonna be one very busy boy this summer. Yesterday I counted four wildfires while flying over Southern Oregon...in *March* for pete's sake. This place is gonna be a freakin' tinderbox this summer.

I've never spent much time in K-Falls but the times I've passed through haven't given me any great desire to hang around. The surrounding area (Southern Cascades) is very nice, though.

Hey everyone, thanks for the info, I'll be sure to pass it on.
Lead, I will give him your email address, thanks for the offer.

And now, what is a "tweaker?"

Dash, you're right about the fire season. They are trying to get him on-line ASAP. They said that the fire season has come over a month early this year.

Klamath Falls was a very "unique" place to live. Immelman hit the high points, but I will elaborate a bit...

It is a very depressed ex-logging town. True statement about a lot of tweakers. Klamath has far more than its fair share of weirdos. Google search the phrase "Pardon me officer while I finish my beer" -- that photo pretty much sums up the experience. Overall it is a safe area, though.

That's a true statement; however, there are parts of town (cheaper neighborhoods) where you don't want to be. One of my daughter's friends is a cop there - of LOT of interesting and freightening stories.

- Cost of housing is very low. I would imaging he'd have no trouble finding accomodations quickly. Heck you can buy a decent house for under 100 grand!

That used to be the case, but homes in neigherhoods where you'd actually want to raise a family will run $150K+. Still a bargain compared to places like SOCAL, but expensive when compared to places in the mid-West. There are plenty of newer apartment complexes in good parts of town, so housing won't be a problem.

- During the summer the bugs will drive you nuts.

I don't think Immelman placed enough emphasis on the midges. They are absolutely incredable. (Immelman, did I get the green color right?)

The hunting and fishing are great. However, Klamath lake is a real dissappoinment - it's very shallow and later in summer fills up with a thick green algea. They harvest the stuff and sell it in health food stores. There are some real monster trout in the lake, but unless you enjoy the flavor of seaweed, you can't eat them after the algea sets up. There are plenty of other places to fish and hunt and the entire area is pretty much a mecca if you're into that type of thing.

As far as restraurants, etc...

Up until they built the new Applebees, the best restraurant in Klamath Falls was in Medford. (That alone ought to tell you something about the place.) If your bother is single and looking he won't be happy. If he has school aged kids he won't be happy. If he is looking to fight fires, make a lot of money then move on, he's found the right place.

Uwe at Pelican Aviation does a nice job. I spent a lot of time on the road with him and know him very well.

My opinion of Klamath Falls? (Many of the locals call it Calamity Falls.) Oregon is a nice place to live, but if you ever had to give Oregon an enima you would insert it in Klamath Falls.

He's looking to work hard and make a lot of money and see what happens.

Lead, I think he'll be shooting you an email in the near future.

I flew fires out of KFalls. Never stay any place in town where you can smell curry when you walk into the front office. That doesn't just apply to KFalls, but any place, really.

I can also tell you this from experience; if you're going to put retardant in water during an emergency dump, do it some place other than Klamath Falls. They, and the Indians, have no sense of humor about that.

This place is gonna be a freakin' tinderbox this summer.

We can only hope.

Hey lead, did you fly for JW there? Just asking 'cuz you mentioned Uwe. I mopped the floor and wiped the bugs off of airplanes for him for a while for time in his Citabria. good times!

....you got the midgie green color spot on!

In retrospect I suppose you're right about the crime, etc... and the restaurants. There was actually one really good small steak house on the main drag, surprisingly... but that was it.

Illini: Well to me, 'tweaker' means someone who trips on mind-altering drugs. Lots of meth-heads and lsd-cases there...but I live in a hippie-town in California now so maybe I cannot tell the difference, lots of weirdos here too!

I did, but the chief pilot and director of flight ops have, how do I say it politely? Unique concepts of what was safe and acceptable.

Medford or Ashland are on the other side of the Cascades, a little over an hour's drive (good weather).
