Just today I heard from a buddy who JSed with a very senior AS CA, he said that Kitty Hawk bought about 10-15 737-300's and is having some outfit in Israel fit them with cargo doors, they then plan on competing with AS throughout SE Alaska. I know this sounds pretty steep, any opinions out there?

AS needs to get their act together quick if they want to keep the combi thing going!

Actually, Alaska is hiring Kitty Hawk to operate the mail contract it just won in Southeast Alaska. They did buy some 737-300's with cargo doors. That mod didn't work for Alaska because they wanted a combi, the 300 cargo door STC isn't certified as a combi, just a straight freighter. Alaska is chartering them until they can get their fleet figured out and can operate the contract themselves.

OK I see, sounded like Kitty Hawk was jumping in to compete with them. I heard that AS bought a -300 to get the same conversion, but have to stand in line to get that done........

No, they were talking about getting 300's but that fell through. Latest rumor is that they are cutting cargo doors in 6 of their 400's.
